Publisher's Summary
New York Times Audio best seller | Amazon Editor's pick | Audible Editor's pick
After more than 500 years of exile, the heir to the empyre is wary about his sudden reassignment to active duty on the Goblin War’s front lines. His mission to rescue an outpost leads to a dead-end canyon deep inside enemy territory, and his suspicion turns to dread when he discovers the stronghold doesn't exist. But whoever went to the trouble of planning his death to look like a casualty of war didn't know he would be assigned to the Seventh Sikaria Auxiliary Squadron. In the depths of an unforgiving jungle, a legend is about to be born, and the world of Elan will never be the same.
From Michael J. Sullivan, the New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post best-selling author, a new adventure begins with the first book in The Rise and Fall trilogy. Although this series is set in the same world as the Riyria novels and the Legends of the First Empire books, it is a stand-alone tale. As such, no prior knowledge of the other works is required to enjoy this tale to its fullest.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Dragons Riders: The last noble warriors in the realm. Only heroes can embolden the ordinary. For centuries, millennia, the Dragon Riders galvanized generation after generation, adding Riders to their ranks and birthing dragons from their eggs. But there are no more heroes. War with the Andarens is like nothing the Riders, nor the armies of Erador, have ever faced. In the place of heroes, there are only soldiers now. Fodder for the machine of war. This time of twilight is set to be the crowning hour of the dark when the light is losing its grip.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

The book was great, but...
Michael J. Sullivan is definitely one of my favourite authors, and the world he created is one that I can listen to and read over and over. But this story, while still a great listen / read, felt a little too neat and tidy.
I didn't get the same feeling with the character development as in previous books, and things just felt rushed and wrapped up too quickly.
The Age of Myth series was one of my all-time favorites and the entire series had a very whimsical feel and took the time to set the stage between the different races and groups of humans, along with each religious belief.
I hope book two does more to really set the story and bring the world to life.

Story Reflection for Nolyn
It was somewhat difficult to follow at times as the story switched back and forth from various story lines but they came together at the end. The language was superb and I could tell there was much research done with various subjects I was quite familiar with.

The world of Elan continues to grow!!!
As with all MJS books written in the world of Elan, this was a fantastic books with new insights into the world and LOTS of Easter eggs for readers "in the know". The book was exciting and I loved the mirror images MJS portrays with past events. The characters were interesting and unique. The plot was a bit slow to start but ramps up comes together. Only gripe is I love a good close out. While the ending was great, I would've liked to have a bit more insight into what happens after.... Maybe next book.. Overall, I can't give any book in this world less than a 5 star rating! They're just too amazing.
While it's mentioned that this is a stand alone novel, I do think it gives a fair amount away from the Legends series. If you're interested and have never read any world of Elan books before, I would recommend starting with the Legends of the First Empyre first. You'll have a much better adventure picking up on all the eggs in this book!

Very good start for the new series!
I lowered performance not because Tim wasn’t top notch, he sure was, but because there is many timing mistakes with blanks at the beginning of each chapter or section and we lose about 1-2 seconds of speech every time. This is minor but quite annoying.

Like Saying Hello to Old Friends
A love seeing a few familiar characters appear in this book. It felt both new and well known. I must have loved it becouse I stayed up well in to the morning to finish the story.
I didn't have as deep a connection with all the main characters as I have in some of the author's other works. Possibly becouse the story spans the time of just two weeks instead of mo that or years like some of the books that come before. But for a forst book in a new series it scratched the itch for me very well.
