Publisher's Summary
For fifteen years FitzChivalry Farseer has lived in self-imposed exile, assumed to be dead by almost all who once cared about him. But now, into his isolated life, visitors begin to arrive: Fitz's mentor from his assassin days; a hedge-witch who foresees the return of a long-lost love; and the Fool, the former White Prophet, who beckons Fitz to fulfill his destiny.
Then comes the summons he cannot ignore. Prince Dutiful, the young heir to the Farseer throne, has vanished. Fitz, possessed of magical skills both royal and profane, is the only one who can retrieve him in time for his betrothal ceremony, thus sparing the Six Duchies profound political embarrassment - or worse. But even Fitz does not suspect the web of treachery that awaits him - or how his loyalties will be tested to the breaking point.

Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

Story
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Took me bit to get into it but now I'm hooked
I wasn't into the narration at first, but I figured I'd give it an honest try. The characters grew on me and so did the narration. Now I'm invested and kind of wish I'd started on the first series! Definitely an oops it's past my bedtime but I just have to get to a good stopping point kind of book!

Excellent Choice
The story is slow to unfold, and it doesn't carry a pace that grips you and pulls you in, However, I thought the narrator was fantastic and kept me engaged until the pace quickened a bit. The idea of having a relationship with your animal is an intriguing one, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story. The writing itself, in spite of the pace, is well done. As a writer myself, the way Robin Hobb strings his words and thoughts together, was a pleasure to behold. I have already purchased the 2nd in the series. If it was a different narrator I probably wouldn't have. I would listen to anything James Langton narrates.

Best accidental find in years
I wasn't sure what to expect on selecting this book but I trusted in the reviews I had read and took a chance. Now that I'm only half way done, I'm grateful that I stumbled across this title and it's already one of my favourite series. When I say I stumbled across it, I really mean it. I haven't read or listened to any of the other books in this series and yet I feel completely absorbed into their world. within a few minutes I knew I'd be committed to this series and would read or listen to all 16 books. let the journey begin!

A great discovery
I have been searching for a new series to listen to for quite a while when Audible offered this book free in December. After listening to the first chapter I knew I had better listen to the first 3 titles in the trilogy before continuing. I enjoyed the tales of Fitz Chivalry's youth, and would suggest that reader's listen to them before starting this newer trilogy.
That said, my estimation this story with the mature Fitz is even better than the previous ones where he was young and far too impetuous, often causing him to make foolish and regrettable decisions that drove the plot. An older, more self controlled Fitz, in this tale still has some of his earlier traits, but in moderation. Hobbs' narrative is richly descriptive, and complements the story line of this book perfectly. I found myself soaking it all in appreciatively as I followed the very compelling details of Fitz' and Lord Golden's search for the missing Prince Dutiful.
The narrator in this series is a better fit, too, and added to the listening pleasure for me.
I have the next book downloaded and am eagerly anticipating the next chapters in this excellent saga.

Glad I gave it a chance
I did not think I would like this book so much. I usually read other genres. I really liked this book. I especially liked the characters and the world the author has created. I found the actor's voice very pleasant.
