About this listen

For fifteen years FitzChivalry Farseer has lived in self-imposed exile, assumed to be dead by almost all who once cared about him. But now, into his isolated life, visitors begin to arrive: Fitz's mentor from his assassin days; a hedge-witch who foresees the return of a long-lost love; and the Fool, the former White Prophet, who beckons Fitz to fulfill his destiny.

Then comes the summons he cannot ignore. Prince Dutiful, the young heir to the Farseer throne, has vanished. Fitz, possessed of magical skills both royal and profane, is the only one who can retrieve him in time for his betrothal ceremony, thus sparing the Six Duchies profound political embarrassment - or worse. But even Fitz does not suspect the web of treachery that awaits him - or how his loyalties will be tested to the breaking point.

Took me bit to get into it but now I'm hooked

I wasn't into the narration at first, but I figured I'd give it an honest try. The characters grew on me and so did the narration. Now I'm invested and kind of wish I'd started on the first series! Definitely an oops it's past my bedtime but I just have to get to a good stopping point kind of book!

Great Listen

If you don't like engaging prose, characters to care for, and a great reading by the narrator, stay away from this book.

Excellent Choice

The story is slow to unfold, and it doesn't carry a pace that grips you and pulls you in, However, I thought the narrator was fantastic and kept me engaged until the pace quickened a bit. The idea of having a relationship with your animal is an intriguing one, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story. The writing itself, in spite of the pace, is well done. As a writer myself, the way Robin Hobb strings his words and thoughts together, was a pleasure to behold. I have already purchased the 2nd in the series. If it was a different narrator I probably wouldn't have. I would listen to anything James Langton narrates.

Glad I gave it a chance

I did not think I would like this book so much. I usually read other genres. I really liked this book. I especially liked the characters and the world the author has created. I found the actor's voice very pleasant.

Like visiting an old friend.

In my youth I read the Assassin series and it was one of my favorite collection at the time. Listening to this brought me back in time and it filled me with joy to hear about Fitz and Nighteyes after the events of the previous series.

There was a few paragraphs that brought me to tears because I knew what was coming. It was written with such love and respect, weeping was the only valid response.

The narration was fine except for the interpretation of female voices. It reminded me of someone making fun of one's mother by imitating her voice when being admonished.

A calm story

I found the reader very easy to listen to, with a slow calm pace. This made it an excellent choice for bed time listening. The story over all was interesting, but I think it would have been better had I read or listened to the previous books. Overall I enjoyed listening to it.
