About this listen
Shetland Detective Jimmy Perez knows it will be a difficult homecoming when he returns to Fair Isle. It’s a community where strangers, while welcomed, are still viewed with a degree of mistrust. With the autumn storms raging, the island feels cut off from the rest of the world. Tempers among the trapped islanders become frayed. Enough to drive someone to murder?
When a body is discovered, the islanders react with fear. With no support from the mainland, Jimmy has to investigate the old-fashioned way. And with no way off the island until the storms abate, he knows he has to work quickly. There’s a killer on the island waiting for the opportunity to strike again....

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Superb...as always!
Ann Cleeves did it again. I was just as absorbed and intrigued by this Perez novel as the previous I’ve enjoyed. And the narrator is simply THE best!
No question that I’ll be getting the next one in the series.

Another great Shetland story
The Shetland series of books by Ann Cleeves is a great way to learn about the islands. Her writing describes the topography and highlights of localities in a way that you yearn to visit. The crimes, as incongruent as they are to fit with the nature of Shetlanders is a conduit to a locale that is beautifully raw.
As always, Kenny Blyth does a superb job narrating.

ok
Picked this up months and months ago during an Audible sale, along with three others in the series. I don't exactly regret it, but they just aren't to my taste.
I sort of remembered this from the TV version, although it was quite different. It was... ok, like the others I've listened to so far, it's very slow. Very. The story wasn't particularly exciting. It was a bit of a locked room mystery, which isn't my thing. The fact that I more or less remembered the solution didn't help. Also, the characters were almost uniformly unlikable, again. Such sad, petty, amoral people. The first victim was atrocious and I found myself not caring when she was killed. Oh, and then the writer WENT THERE with victim 3. It felt so melodramatic and unnecessary, but also very calculated.
Overall, it was alright for passing the time at work.

Had to stop listening
I let the book run out to the end but stopped listening at chapter 20. I knew what was coming and didn’t want to hear it. I don’t know what the author’s motivation was in writing this into the plot, but I was invested in the characters and felt betrayed (grateful, though, for spoilers I inadvertently came across). Still, I will go on to Dead Water and hope for a more uplifting experience.
