Publisher's Summary

Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library

Ruth Galloway receives a phone call that bears shocking news. A friend of hers from college, Dan Golding, has been killed in a fire at his Lancashire home. Her shock turns to alarm when she gets a letter from Dan. He has made a discovery that will change archaeology forever but he needs Ruth's advice. Even more alarming, he sounds vulnerable and frightened. DCI Harry Nelson is also rediscovering his past. Up north for a holiday, he meets his former colleague Sandy MacLeod, now at Blackpool CID. Sandy tells him there are strange circumstances surrounding Dan Golding's death. Many of those who worked with Dan seem to be afraid.

Many have secrets to hide. Ruth is drawn deep into the mystery, and where she goes, so does her toddler daughter, Kate. This time, it's not just Ruth's life at risk.

Really disappointed

Was a great story but could not tolerate the person reading when she made her voice like a child a man it was so irritating that I can’t stand it anymore. Would have loved this.

Disappointed

I don’t think publishers understand how discombobulating changing narrators in a series is. This change heavily impacted my enjoyment of this book. Why do this?? Also I have to say the male voices were bad, almost cartoonishly bad . I thought the storey was pretty lame too, so overall not a great listen.

Overall pretty good

I have been listening to the series and found the change in voice actor to be distracting.
Overall it was entertaining but not my favourite.

Great Story

I've loved all the books - and the previous narration. However the narration by Clare Corbett is very annoying. The female characters are fine but the male characters all sound extremely thick. Especially the male characters from Lancashire. I found it really grating. The story saved me from turning off and I definitely would have if this was the first book

great book, preferred narration by Jane MacDowell

loved the book, but preferred previous narrator. I found it a little harder to connect to the characters with the different voices.

Piercing child’s voice

Terrible narrator. I will skip ahead to avoid the piercing voices, particularly the child’s voice. Dreadful.

Compelling Story

Another great story and more time with these wonderful characters. She does beautiful job layering in the complexity of the characters and history in an entertaining story. I really like the narrator, but the sound mixing gets really loud and sharp when she does the baby’s voice. I almost drive off the road when it came on in my car. It sounded like it was 20 decibels louder.

3 cheers for Elly Griffiths

As usual, I loved it. On par with her other books. I hate it when they end.

Loved this book!

I really enjoyed this story - the plot, the characters, their relationships. At first, I was disgruntled by the change in narrator, but then Ms. Corbett grew on me. The central characters are starting to feel like old friends.

Vices

I like the story but the voices of the men were different than the voices in the previous books in the serie. Their voices were annoying!
