Publisher's Summary

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned.

But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

An abused girl becomes a leader in child advocacy

Bravely sharing her story gives hope to victims that they can survive, find their place in society and thrive. Keenan should be so proud of everything she and Palin have achieved.

Absolutely heart wrenching and emotional listen.

I almost stopped listening because of how detailed and traumatic this story is. Then, I decided I do need to listen to it as fairytales and happy endings aren’t always the case. That this is someone’s story and life and extends far beyond them. This gross behaviour happens all the time and even still. I commend Shy for sharing her story! I wish I could go back in time and save her and all around her alike. She was dealt the most unfair cards and still comes out with a positive spin of perspective and strength. Support her and her phoenix survivors. ♥️

Courage

Amazingly candid story about a horrific childhood that couldn’t stop the courage and strength of the author to take unbelievable steps for the sake of all abused children.

How is this real? How could all of this happen?

When listening to this book, I kept thinking there is no way it could possibly get worse for this child. Then it did get worse, again and again. The strength Shy has while a small child and into adulthood is breath taking. I cannot imagine how this is the truth - and it is. The facts and truths in this documentary are shocking. The book was very well written, and the audible reader did an excellent job in portraying this horrendous childhood and life that Shy has. It is difficult to listen to, only because you want to shout at the top of your lungs WHY?! STOP!! Someone please believe her!

One of the best/worst stories written

I found this story to be written very well, with as much description as possible, considering the topic.

Harrowing and inhuman

This book is one of the hardest I've ever came across. Her abuse never stops, every turn sharper than the next. I wanted to scream at the social workers, police, judges, lawyers ANYONE because none of them did anything but harm her further. We can't do anything to change her past but we can hear her story, her pains, and weep for and with the author. Really well explain without being too graphic. Definitely recommend it.

Heart wrenching

This is a very sad true story, so heartbreaking I had to stop listening a few times because the child abuse was so extreme that it was affecting my life. It’s unthinkable that these poor girls could not get children services and the police to help them.
I was very inspired by her strength through all this turmoil and pain in her life.

Wow

What a very sad and gripping account of childhood abuse to the extreme.. it hurts to hear what some people go through, as children no less. I’m glad there was justice in the end.. but it should never have taken a lifetime to get justice!

“Heart Broken”

This was a very difficult listen. I cannot begin to imagine what this must have been like for her even though I have just listened to Shy’s story. I am pleased that Shy has come out the other side and continues in helping so many others. We clearly have to not only listen to our children, but equally important is that we need to be aware of what is happening around us.

This isn't a true story.

I just want to start off by saying, no social worker is going to believe that an 11 year old would "come onto their father" like what? also the courts didn't believe there was abuse, the police didn't believe it, no one? I don't think so. oh wait sorry, grandma and grandpa believed it but they just didn't say anything to anyone. also, at 14 you were allegedly claiming to be 18-21? BS. no one would have believed that. unless there is solid proof, like court case details that proved your claim, I call B.S.

the reason I write this review is that I've listened to so many people's stories, all about sexual abuse, and yes teachers and parents don't believe them but the social workers, police, and courts do. One other thing I want to point out, no lawyer is allowed to call an 11-14 year old a "tease"
