About this listen

The new novel by the author of the best-selling The World Walker series.

'My name is Daniel Harbin, and I'm a child of The Deterrent.'

What if a superhuman turned out not to be so super...or even human? Britain's superhero, The Deterrent, was unveiled to the world in 1979 and disappeared two years later. The truth about his origins has never been revealed. The rumours about his children - those that survived - and their mysterious abilities have never been confirmed. Until now.

Armed with a diary that reveals everything about The Deterrent's early years, Daniel Harbin - discovering powers of his own - finds himself dragged into the same secretive government department his famous father worked for. Can a halfhero be a better superhero than his father, or is Daniel making a terrible mistake? When the wrong people know what you're capable of, no matter how powerful you are, you're still in danger....

What the critics say

"I've read it now, Children of the Deterrent that is and um...it's good. It's really good. Oh my days it's good.... From the opening page, I was seriously gripped. In fact, for the first time in years, I put my own work aside and pushed my deadlines back a bit to make time to read it. I even did that reader thing of going to bed early, just so I could get stuck back into it." (R R Haywood)

Excellent listen

As I bought this book on sale, I really didn’t have much hope.
Let’s start with the performance. Not once did I question why this performer was hired. I especially found the reporters piece worthy of listening twice more.
Usually I prefer crime mysteries but this plot held my attention and found excuses to keep listening.

Unexpected storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

it's so hard to find something original. This book had me up all night until I finished it. Highly recommend it.

Nice

Nothing revolutionary here, just a nice book to listen to. Story is good enough to keep attention but you can also put it down easily and come back later.

Meh - good, but not great.

I liked the story - but it was slow and really obvious sometimes. I was an OK listen - the kind you can have on in the background, miss a bit and come back to without loosing anything.

Spectacular story and performance!

I loved this story. It had an interesting premise, was told in an entertaining style, and had believable characters (if at times scary) and a sufficiently complex plot line to keep you guessing. Very enjoyable to listen to it!!

Marvelous surprise

I didn't expect much from this book. I grabbed it as a daily deal that looked at least a little interesting, and boy, was it ever.

An excellent, and fresh take on the superhero mythos, excellently performed.

Refreshingly original

Finally, a book that combines urban fantasy, SciFi, and action with wit, intelligence and interesting characters. Nice take on the whole superhero genre!

Unfortunately, I found the male narrator detracted somewhat from my enjoyment as his funereal monotone dragged on relentlessly with barely any noticeable inflection. Despite this, I'll definitely listen to the rest of the trilogy as the storyline is enough to stop me from drifting off into a hypnotic trance.

It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a... blob of slime

What if a "Superman" had been raised by a secret government agency instead of by the Kent family?

What if he engendered children via one-night-stands?

What if it all went bad?

This is the most chilling superhero story since "Watchmen."

How refreshing

This book should be made into a movie, it's excellent I couldn't put it down, kind of had a sleepless night, but it kept me right there, it's not your usual science fiction, enjoyed all the characters, narrated where excellent they made the story so alive,
