As stories about Alex's past begin to come to the forefront, he finds himself facing off against adepts who want to see him punished for his past mistakes. Not only does Alex now have to worry about physical threats, he needs to face off against emotional threats as well if he is going to protect the people he loves.
I loved this look into the trauma of Alex's past and seeing it catch up with him. This was a very deep dive into Alex's former life and a glimpse of all the terrible things he and the other students endured. While Alex's backstory was the most important, I admit that I loved seeing certain thing from other perspectives. The emotions in certain moments were raw and powerful and lead to what I think is an excellent ending.
The action, excitement, and twists were still rife throughout the book, and I really enjoy seeing this magic system in play. Currently, this is my favourite book in the series and I can't wait to see where things go from here!
