About this listen

Arthur C. Clarke winner Adrian Tchaikovsky's triumphant return to fantasy with a darkly inventive portrait of a city under occupation and on the verge of revolution. There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores. Ilmar, some say, is the worst place in the world and the gateway to a thousand worse places. Ilmar, City of Long Shadows. City of Bad Decisions. City of Last Chances.

A Twisting Tale of Great Characters

Such an interesting array of characters, locations and factions. Tchaikovsky weaves the hopes and hungers of these characters in a way that keeps you guessing, what will happen next, who will betray whom, and what strange but perfectly plausible oddity will show up next.
This fantastically rich cast of characters is brought to life by the wonderful narration.
Thoroughly enjoyed!

Amazing world building, great performance

A really fun and interesting setting. The cast is large and varied. This book reminds me of China Mieville’s urban offerings. Highly recommended!

Everyone is Scottish there?

Couldn't stand the narrator, try as I might. Even while stuck in a remote spot with no internet where it was my only audiobook available, I found it impossible to continue with.
Every character speaks in the exact same ridiculous and disingenuous 'Scottish accent attempt'. Overall I just got the feeling that the narrator didn't care about the story much.
So it was very hard to really tell if the story itself is good or not.
Disappointing. I had been looking forward to this one.
