About this listen
DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.
Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.
Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Story
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Story
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Great story!
I am really enjoying Joy Ellis' story telling and writing. I started with another one of the series and really enjoyed all. The narrative style of this reader takes a little to get used to, especially when it comes to distinguishing the different characters voices. However, by the finish, the characters had just really reeled me into their wonderful world.

Didn’t think I was going to like it
At the beginning I didn’t really like the character Nikki but as the story progressed I was pleasantly surprised. I did enjoy this book and look forward to book 2 in the series

Good books - and a suggestion!
I have been listening to this series, after really enjoying the Jackman series read by Richard Armitage. The stories themselves are good, despite sometimes being a bit overly complicated. I saw in the reviews that some people had a really difficult time with the performance by Henrietta Meire, and said that they were deleting them. I had a difficult time adjusting to Ms. Meire's voice, after the rich tones and consistent accents of Mr. Armitage. Her voice is a bit shrill, she reads quickly, and her grasp of the accents and different tones of the characters is good at times and a bit off at others. I nearly stopped listening, but then used my musician brain and thought to try to adjust the voice. I slowed the recording to 0.8x and it made a HUGE difference. It takes the shrill tone out of her voice most of the time (if it it really bothersome, try 0.7x) and is simply much easier to hear. Since then (book 2) I have listened to the series in order and have enjoyed them. The voices are not always perfect, but overall it is a very enjoyable series.

excellent book
I have listened to all of Joy Ellis's Jackman and Evans books so was hoping the DI Niikki Galena ones would be just as good. I wasn't disappointed. Book No 1 was excellent.

Great story, horrific narrator
This book and (at least the two I've finished) the series are very engaging, well-written, and enjoyable.
The narrator should try a new job - or maybe visit some places in the UK. She can't do a Lincolnshire accent, an Irish accent, or a Geordie accent and barely changes vocals for any character. Such a shame.
