Publisher's Summary

When Christa joins a tour group heading deep into the snowy expanse of the Rocky Mountains, she's hopeful this will be her chance to put the ghosts of her past to rest. But when a bitterly cold snowstorm sweeps the region, the small group is forced to take shelter in an abandoned hunting cabin. Despite the uncomfortably claustrophobic quarters and rapidly dropping temperature, Christa believes they'll be safe as they wait out the storm.

She couldn't be more wrong. Deep in the night, their tour guide goes missing...only to be discovered the following morning, his severed head impaled on a tree outside the cabin. Terrified, and completely isolated by the storm, Christa finds herself trapped with eight total strangers. One of them kills for sport...and they're far from finished. As the storm grows more dangerous and the number of survivors dwindles one by one, Christa must decide who she can trust before this frozen mountain becomes her tomb.

Wow wow wow

I could not stop reading this book! You quickly become involved with the characters and their surroundings, feeling the angst and the terror that each one of them feel.
I can usually figure out who done it, but this one kept me guessing right until the end.
Great narration and amazing story!

Good twists

Liked the plot and the twists, but made the connection quick before the reveal. Started off as a slow burn for me, but picked up more in the middle. Honestly, I think it was the narration that took away from the novel. The narrator isn’t that bad by any means, albeit too whiny-toned at times, but it just seemed like it wasn’t the right fit for the story. I think I may have enjoyed this one more if I read it instead.

An actual whodunnit!

It's so nice when a book comes along that checks all the boxes: Closed circle, isolation, whodunnit. This one did, and was exactly the claustrophobic winter read I was after.

Serviceable Suspense Tale

Darcy Coates clearly understands how to build atmosphere: populating her story about a group of strangers trapped in a snowbound cabin with unlikeable, secretive, constantly bickering denizens. She also has the killer stalking them engage in some legitimately creepy taunting: displaying corpses and leaving gory body parts for discovery.
Less fortunately, it's very difficult to accept the events in the story as even remotely plausible (the necessary suspension of disbelief is quite the ask), connections between victims are tenuous at best (the plot is kinda silly), and Coates's pacing is terrible (it takes half of the book to get to the good stuff).

Black Owl Books Inc. does its best to elevate the book by casting the solidly professional Emily Ellet to read the book.. but struggle to soften her mild natural sibilance. Considering creditable diction, timbre, and tone - but often subpar character interpretations - we have an "acceptable" presentation.

Altogether, 'Dead Of Winter' was a reasonably entertaining 6/10-star 'Daily Deal' selection (some of the graphic imagery is mind's-eye vivid and almost worth the price of admission by itself) - but paying full price would be debatable.

Darcy Strikes Again (eh oo)

Excellent! Gripping. Sad. Powerful. Once I started this one I could not stop. I've always been a Darcy Coates fan but this has worked its way to the top spot. I found I grew attached to a good chunk of the characters (I rarely do that in novels), their individual personalities coming through the pages. I had chills at many chapters and made audiable gasps far to often than I'd like to admit with this book. Highly recommended.

Struggling to keep going.

I'm finding this story very slow, 4 hrs in, and I'm wishing it would just get going already, or be over. I'm noticing the inconsistencies in the story instead of enjoying it. The narrator's voice is monotonous, it never changes pace or inflection and I find my mind wandering away over & over. I don't know if I'll finish, that rarely happens to me. Wish I hadn't purchased this one on a daily deal.

Disappointing

If you like the Friday the 13th type story where there is a lot of senseless killing with little to no storyline then this novel is for you. Only in the last 1/8 of the book did any kind of story line develop. It had so much more potential than the author gave it. I wouldn’t waste your time.
