Publisher's Summary

Don Quixote is the classic story. Called the first modern novel, this marvelous book has stood the test of time to become irrevocably intertwined with the fabric of society. Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

A Grand Picaresque

Great performance! Don Quixote is actually a set of two books, both included here. It is sometimes thought of as the first novel, but I don’t think it is. The second one maybe a little. It’s more of a picaresque, which is a series of episodic adventures, without much of a unifying plot. It’s almost more like a sitcom based on two characters, that lasts many, many seasons. I think it took me 5 months to get through it.

I did give up once because it wasn’t “going anywhere”, but I missed George Guidall’s performance too much, and finished it. It’s deeply enriched my life, and made me think about the ways I’m a little Quixotic too.

I’ll remember this experience forever, but understand if you get this that it’s no Harry Potter. There’s no overarching plot really. It’s a series of episodes that all afford a similar pleasure.

Funny and fast paced

I started this book assuming I know the plot, and then I realized I barely know this famous story. It is unbelievably funny and amusing. The pace is very fast, which I did not expect from a classical.
Last but not least, the narration is easily one of the best. Clear and very colorful.

Far and away the perfect audiobook

The perfect combination of story, characters, and delivery. The narrator gave all characters real life. Be careful with this one folks - you will laugh out loud in public.

Outstanding story and narration

The two books are a very enjoyable series of short interconnected stories. I found the audio performance excellent in all respects.

Holds up

Amazing really that a book almost 400 years old holds up so well. The language is not as complicated as you would expect for the time it was written. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to. The production of this reading was well done

A pleasant surprise and certainly worth the time.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audio book. The narrator was fantastic and he definitely brought it to life. I don't listen to many fictional books but this one is a classic gem.

Masterpiece

This didn’t disappoint. Although the story seemed a bit slow and tedious at first, it became ever more interesting with every ‘errant’ adventure.

With remarkable twists in plot and a superb ending, this really is Miguel’s magnum opus or dare I say that of the western literature, pre-Shakespeare.
