About this listen

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Profoundly moving

An unflinching look at the dual life of a high functioning alcoholic, what rock-bottom looks like and the sad stories of those who never make it into sobriety. Caroline is one of the fortunate ones who did and this is her exquisitely written account of life with and without alcohol.

A classic book about drinking

This is a great book about the routine of drinking. The author goes deep into her own issues that led her to drinking and lists many other examples. The book doesn’t spend a lot of time reviewing theories about addiction. The narration is excellent and a perfect match for the book.

This was an amazing book. I was interested in every word. Honest frank memoir that gives one an understanding of what it is like to be addicted to alcohol. Great narration. Loved the voice

Excellent Read!

I read a lot of recovery books and this is probably the best book I’ve read so far. I could relate to so much of the author’s story. It was so good I read it in 2 days and plan to read it again.
