Publisher's Summary

No one wants to be a victim, but most find the event too hypnotic to ignore. In order to save their traveling carnival from bankruptcy, the Binewskis are creating their own brood of sideshow freaks. Under Al's careful direction, the pregnant Lil ingests radioisotopes, insecticides, and arsenic to make her babies "special". As the oldest daughter, albino dwarf Olympia, puts listeners in the ring-side seat, her family's incredible drama erupts and spills over into the "normal" world.

Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, this brilliantly daring novel is shocking and delightful. Christina Moore's vibrant narration conspires with Katherine Dunn's evocative, energetic prose to shock us at seeing something of ourselves in these exotic characters.

Disturbing but Fascinating

I have many conflicting feelings about this book. I'm trying to decide whether I would have felt differently if I read it when it came out. Probably. If you're not up for weird, this book is not for you. The writing is beautifully rich and metaphorical (is there such a thing as too metaphorical?). The themes are numerous, uncomfortable and complex. The topics are disturbing at times but always thought provoking. What is very clear is the performance: exquisite. High praise for the narrator!

Loveable Characters and a Story I Can’t Get Enough of!

There is no downside to this book; I just wish it was longer. Not a single word is wasted!
The story becomes more gruesome and disturbing as the book gets on so it tempers you. It’s incredible and included in the membership. Just listen already!!!!

very odd book, I liked it a lot. I found myself think about the characters when I wasn't listening.

Freakishly Fascinating with Phenomenal Narration

Some trigger warnings for this book: drug use, drug use during pregnancy, ableism, rape, abuse, emotional abuse, emotional incest, body horror, mutilation, underage sw, medial horror/gore.

Like my headline says, I found this story freakishly fascinating and I couldn’t stop listening! The story itself is quite strange and tragic, but my morbid curiosity about this circus family’s story kept me hooked. Most of the characters are are quite hard to like, but they work their way under your skin and make you feel for them. Katherine Dunn did an amazing job crafting this unique and gritty story that I would recommend to anyone with a fascination with anything dark and strange.

Christina Moore was phenomenal with this narration. The consistency and execution of the voices for the characters was awesome. I especially loved the way she voiced Crystal Lil, specifically in some of the “interview” chapters. I’m excited to find more books narrated by her!

These characters are horrible !

I have never listened to a book where I hated every character…until this one. What a dysfunctional, horrible group of people. I found it impossible to relate to any of them, nor did I want to. The story dragged and although the premise was interesting, once I finished the story, I realized that not a lot really happened. I hoped as it progressed that there would be an insightful lesson or cosmic truth that would explain the purpose of why this book was written…..there wasn’t. I feel the author picked the most shocking subset of humanity she could think of and exploited it. Not something I would recommend. I would have given it one star except it was written well, so I was generous.
