About this listen
Adventuring is a costly affair, and while the tolls are often paid in blood, gold can drain away just as quickly. The party's trek out of Solium and across the lands of Alcatham has left them with only a handful of gold between them. Fortunately, they have drawn near Camnarael, Alcatham's capital, where all manner of quests - and rewards - await. But all is not as expected in the capital. Unusual occurrences have been happening throughout Camnarael: figures in the shadows making unsavory bargains, attackers harassing innocent parishioners, and adventurers from all over the land gathering to partake in a Grand Quest offered by the royal family. Most curious of all are the rumors that speak of a strange artifact serving as the reward for this rare and legendary quest...an artifact that sounds just a bit too familiar to the former NPCs.

Story
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Story
Gifted with meta-human powers, Tori Rivas kept away from the limelight, preferring to work as a thief in the shadows. But when she's captured trying to rob a vault that belongs to a secret guild of villains, she's offered a hard choice: prove she has what it takes to join them or be eliminated. Apprenticed to one of the world's most powerful (and supposedly dead) villains, she is thrust into a strange world where the lines that divide superheroes and criminals are more complex than they seem.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Some people are born boring. Some live boring. Some even die boring. Fred managed to do all three, and when he woke up as a vampire, he did so as a boring one. Timid, socially awkward, and plagued by self-esteem issues, Fred has never been the adventurous sort. One fateful night, Fred reconnects with an old friend at his high school reunion. This rekindled relationship sets off a chain of events thrusting him right into the chaos that is the parahuman world.

Still loving it!!
I really love this story and these characters. Can't wait to find out what comes next!! So many possibilities!
Again, the narrator does a great job giving the characters a voice of their own. (Still miss Grumble's British accent from the first book. lol!)

My favorite series!
I have listened to this series several dozen times, it is my go-to comfort listen. The characters are relatable in a way most fantasy characters are not and each has a veritas in their motivations and speech that is a delight. I highly recommend this to any reader young or old. I am continually impressed with narrator Roger Wayne's amazing range. My husband also likes to listen along to "the Thistle stories". I will be buying the 5th book in the series as soon as it comes out.

Thoroughly Entertaining
I got my first hit of Drew Hayes's books after randomly using my credit on Second Hand Curses on September 2018, just something to listen to while I work. And now less than two months later I have binged listened to all his books on Audible and the withdrawal symptoms are setting in.
I put off the Spells, Swords, and Stealth series for the last because I have never played any sort of table top RPG and I didn't think I'd get the references. However, I'd listened to all the others available on Audible already, there wasn't a 6th Fred book yet, and mama needed her fix.
NPCs turned out to be very entertaining, I didn't love it as much as some of the others but a solid fun read nonetheless. Drew Hayes really knows how to write characters you'd want to hang out with. As the series progressed, every successive book got me more and more hooked into this universe. Going Rogue is a soooooo much fun to read, and now I am invested in these characters, and their journey from what they were in the beginnning of the first book to now. I loved it everytime the game world and the real world almost collided but didn't, it was such a great tease. It made the final converging of paths even more exciting.
I like fun fantasy and sci-fi, growing up on a steady diet of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett among others and more recently Daniel O Malley( So freaking good!), and John Scalzi. I am adding Drew Hayes to that list now.
Unfortunately, I am out of Drew Hayes books to read again and have been managing the emptiness by listening to the very entertaining Authors & Dragons podcast where Hayes is the game master. As someone whose eyes glazed over when people mentioned DnD, this is saying something. I might even look into the many Dnd groups at work and see if I wanna join one of the noob friendly groups.
Waiting for Book 4 of the SSS series.

Another solid story
See Hayes takes on another great ride and deeper into the mystery of just what is going on. What is other end game of the mysterious Bridge gaming group? I can not wait for the next installment.
Roger Wayne is the perfect narrartor. He brings each character to life and is amazing to listen to
Highly recommended.

if you're here you love it. Of course we want #4
If you're here, you're looking for fun, wish fulfilment fantasy... Yep, this is it.
This is a genuine love letter to table top gaming, the story and series are engaging.
The SS&S series has created a much better universe than readers expect from serious or "high fantasy."
The best entry of three strong books, I'm definitely going to purchase #4.
