About this listen

Most people called it a cult. But for 20 years, Josh and Caleb called it home. In Paradise, there is no television. No fast food. Just long hours of farmwork and prayer on a dusty Wyoming ranch and nights in a crowded bunkhouse. The boys of the Compound are kept far from the sinners' world. But Joshua doesn't need temptation to sin. His whole life he's wanted his best friend, Caleb. By day they work side by side. Only when Josh closes his eyes at night can they be together the way he craves. It can never be. And his survival depends on keeping his terrible desires secret.

Caleb has always protected Josh against the worst of the bullying at the Compound. But he has secrets of his own and a plan to get away - until it all backfires. Josh finds himself homeless in a world that doesn't want him. Can Caleb find him in time? And will they find a place of safety, where he can admit to Josh how he really feels?

Warning: Contains a hot male/male romance, copious instances of taking the Lord's name in vain, and love against the kitchen counter. This book was previously released under the title In Front of God and Everyone.

Insert heavy sigh here

This was such a sweet story. It was a binge listen and I regret nothing... I loved the characters, the pace, and the heartwarming ending. I can't wait to read the second book in this series!

Solid

I enjoy most books Teddy Hamilton narrates the other guy though… not a fan at all! Thankfully Teddy narrated the majority.

The story itself was decent a solid 4 star for me! I enjoyed the main characters as well as the secondary!

sweet but lacking depth

The clothes out the window was priceless! way to go Josh!

The synopsis for this book is deceptive. It hints at Josh going homeless and Caleb searching for him, possibly not finding him in time. Because of this, I spent a good part of the book waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop and for Josh to find himself in a dire situation and homeless. This doesn't happen. Not in the dramatic fashion you are led to believe by the synopsis and it is over so quickly you don't even realize it happened.

This book is a love story and a story about finding happiness. It is very sweet but I wish the author had taken this a bit further, adding more depth to the story. A story of love, finding yourself and happiness, but also a book about survival and helping others. Knowing their own struggles and that when members are kicked out they are given 50$ and left on the side of the road with absolutely no skills for survival, I think paying the kindness from Washington forward and setting up something to give those kicked out a helping hand was a wasted opportunity in this book and would provide some resolution there, making this book far more satisfying.

I think Caleb's ridiculous notion about marriage when a female is in a "family way" should have been addressed a bit more. It was glossed over and another missed opportunity to create more substance to the book.

amazing story

I am about half way through, but could not hide my excitement about this review. This audio book is absolute gold. The build up, the making of a story, and facing life head on with nothing but 50 bucks. So sweet and collected, I don't want this series to end.

So sweet and dreamy but Real.

The story is so heartfelt. As a gay man I like a can relate to most of the things in this story growing in a very religious place. The Romance is so pure and lovely!
Both guys' performance is solid and so immersive. Most of the time I felt like I'm personally experiencing the scenes.
However Caleb's narrator isn't very good. he has potential but his voice almost sound monotone and doesn't convey emotion throught his voice quite well.
I wish Joshua's narrator read everything especially the last Act. Such an incredible voice actor. his voice made this book feel alive and real. The emotions in his voice is fantastic!

Josh and Caleb

These two just about broke my heart! They were both so sweet, felt so deeply, and had been punished for it all their lives. Watching as Josh gained his confidence and Caleb learned to emote, absolutely wonderful <3
