About this listen
From the once-popular yet unfairly neglected Victorian writer Charlotte Riddell comes a pair of novels that cleverly upholster the familiar furniture of the haunted house story.
In An Uninhabited House, the hauntings are seen through the perspective of the solicitors who hold the deed of the property. Here we find a shrewd comedic skewering of this host of scriveners and clerks, as slowly the safer world of commerce and law gives way and an encounter with the supernatural becomes more and more unavoidable.
In Fairy Water, Riddell again subverts the expectations of the audience, suggesting a complex moral character for her haunting spirit. Her writing style is succinct and witty, rendering the story spirited and approachable despite its age.

An unusual, but talented writer
Riddell creates interesting characters, and the interactions between these characters are very well developed. She also creates excellent settings and situations. Neither novel appealed to me at first, but that changed for the better as I progressed through the storyline and began to identify with the protagonist.
The audio publisher has made a messy job of logging books into Audible. They have two publisher names (Isis and Isis Publishing Ltd), one series that only includes a segment of that series (British Library Tales of the Weird), and errors in both the titles and book numbering. Makes them hard to find.
The narration was very well performed, and using a variety of narrators is very welcome in a book of short fiction. My only complaint is the presence of the sibilant 'S' that is so common in audio books. Some books are much better, others are much worse in this regard. I think that quality of the audio could be better and reduce the score by one.
