About this listen
Award-winning author Jae’s newest lesbian novel is a medical romance with a few unexpected turns.
Dr. Hope Finlay loves her job as an emergency room physician, especially since it allows her only brief encounters with her patients. She learned early in life not to get attached to anyone because it never lasts.
Laleh Samadi, a waitress at her aunt’s restaurant, is the exact opposite. She easily connects with people and loves her big, boisterous Persian family, despite their tendency to meddle in her life.
When Laleh needs to be rushed to the ER with heart trouble, Hope saves her life. Afterwards, strange things begin to occur: Why does Laleh suddenly know even the most obscure diseases, while Hope is fluent in Farsi?
Soon, they can no longer deny that there’s a mysterious connection between them - one that becomes stronger with each passing day.
Are they losing their minds...or their hearts?

You can always count on Jae for...
...the unexpected! Also, for humor, for laughter, and sometimes, for tears. Like most of her books Jae smoothly adds layers to her plot. They suck you in even when you don't want to commit; and almost against your wishes you end up entangled with yet another gaggle of characters.
Ever resistant to change and sure I would not enjoy a different narrator, I felt a bit grumpy at first...but she is good too.

Cringey ... but hooks you in till the end
The medical aspect was fascinating and impressively accurate but it was dampened by the non-fiction aspect. the family dynamic was spot on and hit a little too close to home at times. One of the main character voices sounded like she had a constant cold. Not my favorite book by Jae but not that bad either.
