More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. Before you knew him as the king or the Immortal, he was Commander Xavier “X” Rodriguez—with ninety-six dives under his belt, the most experienced Hell Diver on the airship known as the Hive. Time after time, he dived through the electrical storms, returning with parts to keep his home in the sky. Then, on a jump into Hades, the most hostile environment in North America, he sacrificed everything for mission and team. Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times and USA Today best-selling series.
While the Hell Divers cross an ocean to battle the machines, an old flesh-and-blood threat returns to the islands.
The mission to Rio de Janeiro ended in victory, but it came at a dire cost, killing most of those who set out to rescue the stranded survivors. Even worse, the skinwalkers’ leader, Horn, escaped with his demonic crew and is coming to take the throne.
Back at the Vanguard Islands, King Xavier Rodriguez has been severely injured in another battle to protect the kingdom. Now an infection threatens to kill the one man who can keep the peace. As he fights for survival, new intel from Rio de Janeiro gives humanity hope of destroying the biggest threat of all: the machines - if the machines don’t find the Vanguard Islands first.

Not as good as the others but worth every penny
Although it didn’t have the same depth and complexity as the other books it was still a great listen and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The storyline is not for me
I've read every book in the series up to book 7. Just couldn't get into the plot... and I'm a voracious reader. It's just not for me.
RC Bray does a good job although I feel like there aren't enough different voices - if you know what I mean. I typically give him a 5 but this one not so...

A gripping volume!
That was the best. I can’t believe how emotionally involved I got with the characters. I guess when you have this many episodes to develop your characters, there SHOULD be a connection, or no one would read (listen to) your books. This is one of those stories where I kept thinking, “This would make a great movie! Or a series. All the boxes were checked on this one and my favourites were some of the secondary characters and the villains were extra loathsome. I won’t spoil the ending but I couldn’t turn it off. I had to ride it out to the end!

Very good addition to the series
Whats there to say? If you’ve made it this far in the series you obviously like it. If by chance you are having second thoughts about adding this book to your library then ill help ya out.
This book has great world building as expected from Sansbury, very good story pace, lots of resolved plots points we were all waiting for, and I must say Sansbury did a masterful job at tying up loose ends. There was more than a few emotional moments, more impactful then all the previous books. And such a great ending, with a nice opening to continue the story. I must say Sansbury did a great job with not milking this series, he ended it good and left an opening for a whole new storyline.

Is this the end? shmaybe?
Overall, great series, great narration and great characters. My only beef, and this is with all apocalyptic books, is we have such devastating lots of lives on the "good" side. Soldiers, civilians etc, but it always seems like there is way more than there actually is. I keep thinking how many more lives lost can they endure before they are down to just a handful.
still, an exciting listen
