Publisher's Summary

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

“Sometimes the universe throws you a rope.”BILL HODGES

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Audiences have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down.

Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harboring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver the shockingly twisted professors in this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King.

“I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr. Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.” STEPHEN KING

king always entertaining

I was a little let down by this story and how Holly seemed to to be a little less broken in this story.
Maybe she just sounded more broken with Will Pattons narration than Justine’s.
Even with that said this book is still more entertaining and creative than most out there.
Steven King is on another level in storytelling.
Nailed the Pandemic vibe for me.

Not so thrilling

I’m just going to leave a brief note as I don’t feel like going on a lengthy frustrated review.
Besides the good writing (hence my ratings), this one did not work for me, unfortunately. And I’m saying as a big fan of Mr. King.
The development of the storyline was very bland and without any mystery or thrilling moments.
Even the creepy old couple were far from being scary (but I did like the dynamic between them).
Anyways… BLM, COVID, vaxxers, anti-vaxxers, Trump… so repetitive.
Really.
There was nothing extraordinary here.
Not even as an entertainment.
And the conclusion?
Holly was too lucky.

The author’s notes at the end was interesting, although I didn’t think he needed to explain why he picked those events.

Loved the narrator

I enjoyed this book very much and the narrator was AMAZING. But although I agree with Stephen King’s views on Covid and vaccines, I thought he took it a little bit too far. Way too much talk about everything Covid related, to a point where it felt a little forced. Other than that, another delicious Stephen King novel. Can’t wait for the next one.

Great performance and story!

Though horror fiction, its relevance to the times and relatable characters made elevated the horror as it felt like it could have been a true story.

Excellent

I have loved the character of Holly Gibney ever since I read Mr. Mercedes and this book did not disappoint. a great detective with her own personal demons. I hope there are more stories about her in the future.

For a Holly book It was just ok- disappointing

I love Holly Gibney- she's been my favourite character since her first moment of life, but I have to admit the narrator, isn't my Holly. Not even close.
My Holly sounds like she's autistic, her voice sounds often like mine...I absolutely relate to her. She also has always been voiced by Will Patton- not Justine Lupe. 4 books and in another short novel. Justine does an ok job, but she injected no personality into Holly, and as such, it was just another book, which completely disappointed me.
I wanted Will's Holly, who has character galore. The Covid stuff makes more sense if you KNOW Holly, Oooof. She'd be completely horrified, terrified, like most of us were at the beginning, but she's also OCD and germs are NOT cool with Holly. Will gets her. Justine missed.

I love Stephen King, I own most of his writing, but Stephen, stop writing about Trump- I hate him and his name drags me screaming from what was an enjoyable story.
It is a good book, but it's not a favourite and I likely won't listen to it again, not like my favourite books which I listen to over and over.
