Publisher's Summary

One of America's most original comedic voices delivers a darkly funny, wryly observed, and emotionally raw account of her year of death, cancer, and epiphany.

In the span of four months in 2012, Tig Notaro was hospitalized for a debilitating intestinal disease called C. diff, her mother unexpectedly died, she went through a breakup, and then she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. Hit with this devastating barrage, Tig took her grief onstage. Days after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she broke new comedic ground, opening an unvarnished set with the words, "Good evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer." The set went viral instantly and was ultimately released as Tig's sophomore album, Live, which sold 100,000 units in just six weeks and was later nominated for a Grammy.

Now the wildly popular star takes stock of that no good, very bad year - a difficult yet astonishing period in which tragedy turned into absurdity and despair transformed into joy. An inspired combination of the deadpan silliness of her comedy and the openhearted vulnerability that has emerged in the wake of that dire time, I'm Just a Person is a moving and often hilarious look at this very brave, very funny woman's journey into the darkness and her thrilling return from it.

The best book I have ever listened to.

I am grateful that watching Tig Notaro's Netflix special led me to downloading her album LIVE and finally this book. I needed to hear this. Tig, you have inspired me to move forward and see the light, at the end of a year long tunnel. Many thanks.

If you like Tig's comedy you'll like it.

It was good and funny and deeply personal. Definitely a bit dark but so worth it.

Moving listen

I got this book because I'd heard Tig interviewed on a couple of podcasts. Even so, it took me a while to get used to her narrative style, but once i did, this listen was engaging and moving.

Insightful and inspiring story

I’m in awe of Tig as I’ve come to know her story and struggles. She has come through on the other side of them strong, confident and fully pursuing her development in her career of passion and her thriving family and friendships. She is an inspiration to me and I am truly grateful for her detailed account of her journey for others to hear, laugh, cry and then take on a journey of their own.

I guess I needed that cry

Tig tells her story in a gentle, but “no-holds-barred” type of of way. Families are so complex. How we are brought up and nurtured into this world are so similar, yet the outcomes are wildly different.
Tig’s public vulnerabilities are so warm, raw and appreciated.
I listened to this book as I walked my dogs over a three day weekend. I only could guess the people in my neighbourhood think I going through something really bad. Or really sad.
I guess I needed that cry.
Miigwetch, (thank you)
Tig. ❤️

Honest. Real.

As someone who is living with cancer, this book reached into my heart and helped.
