A great Victorian yarn

This story is full of the optimistic, adventurous spirit of the period.

Allan Quatermain and his companions are fun heroes. They are quite exceptional in some areas, but not in others, and are riddled with eccentricity. Where they shine, they shine brightly, and they are modest about it. Indeed, their great 'superpower', common to all of them, is their loyalty and virtue, demonstrated throughout the story.

King Solomon's Mines is a novel of its time in dealing with natives and race (and no doubt the cultural Marxists would want to see it burned), but it has a much sweeter side that only fools would disregard.

The narrator is very good; his voice is perfect for the story. He changes accents a little for the different characters, but it works.

An excellent book all in all.
