About this listen

A Great War is coming, and it will engulf the Imperium of Man. The Space Marines of the Alpha Legion, the last and most secretive of all the Astartes brotherhoods, arrive on a heathen world to support the Imperial Army in a pacification campaign against strange and uncanny forces. But what drives the Alpha Legion? Can they be trusted, and what side will they choose when the Great War begins? Loyalties are put to the test, and the cunning schemes of an alien intelligence revealed, as the fate of mankind hangs in the balance.

smoke and mirrors

this was my second attempt to reading it, and ended up finishing it. first time I couldn't follow what was going on, lost interest, and dropped it.

Tried again months later and finished it. Ended up being a good one, just a slower burn up to the end, which was worth it.

It follows the imperial army mostly with some alpha legion on the side for a good first half of the book, then the second half was when things started to unravel.

Hard to get into but is worth the trouble

Lots of people say that this book can be skipped but I say its worth the read. Its pretty much gives reason to the actions of the alpha legion.

The story can be be quite complicated at the start but once things start unraveling it becomes a fantastic read.

Intrigué and nuance in the 30th millenium

Point form review

-humanized space marines (but they still feel super human)
-expanded on how the great crusade worked
-intrigue and backstabbing abound
-female characters feel a little like arm candy for the male characters

Would recommend for people who are interested in Warhammer in general and for long time fans. Very entertaining.

Awesome, eff me confused.

I bought this to learn a little of Alpha. Why G was the protagonist was confusing Fer 3/4 the tale, then it made horrible sense. the heresy hasn't happened yet. no spoiler here, just listen Till the end.

Slower than usual for Dan

I really wanted to like this, but it was a slog. I love the idea of alpha legion and wanted to learn more about them. It's a well written book but it's a slow pacing, slower than in used to coming from Guants Ghosts. The performance was amazing as usual.

another great title

Dan Abnett does it again. Great tale with some impressive twists and turns. It is a good intro to the Alpha Legion and their style of warfare.

So good, so unpredictable! so... alpha legion.

Excellent writing, and presentation by the narrator. There are times I paused it not wanting to know what happens next because of the suspense.... only to return 5 minutes later to continue. This one is well worth anyones time!

I'm Alpharius! We are all Alpharius!

#Audible1 The Alpha Legion. A legion that works in the shadow. Of all the legions in the WH 40K saga, this is the least known of all the legions to me. Renowned for their infiltration tactics, this book tells the story of their way of waging war. Throughout the entire audiobook, I never knew what was happening and why until the author Dan Abnett tips his hand. There is no doubt that the Alpha Legion is moving the characters through this story to their own ends. I found the book to be somewhat monotonous in details at times and could not get invested in the characters. While it was well written, my personal tastes did not find this book as pleasing as others written by Dan Abnett.
