Incroyable!

The Good The Bad and The Ugly

I found some of the stories riveting, and others left me wanting. Overall eloquent. The narrator is decent enough. At no point was it difficult to understand what was being said. However most of the time it felt very clinical, like it was being read at me instead of read to me.

I couldn't even get into the stories as the reading was so expressionless.

I really wanted to listen to these stories, but I just couldn't take the reading style anymore. Maybe with a printed copy to follow along with, it would have been better, as I could have seen when one paragraph ended and the next began, or when someone was speaking or who it was.

Chapter Labeling

Proper chapter labeling would make this collection 1000x better. Great collection but unable to navigate easily.

Narrator is not the best

EAP is my favourite author of all time and the narrator that read this unabridged version was annoying and robot like; although, he spoke clearly, he never changed his tone.

Could have been a Five-Star recording...

..but it's still amazing. This is a phenomenal collection. It is complete, exhaustive, and organized lovingly and logically. I love Edgar Allen Poe's writing. I am not a poetry fan, so it helps that the prose is presented early and the poems later, but if you are an afficianado, you can start at Chapter 107 and enjoy. Poe writes clearly, descriptively, and with a full understanding of what is chilling and what is infectiously fascinating. EAP is rightfully celebrated for his engrossing exploration of dark subject matter - but his mystery stories, lighthearted farces, philosophical expositions, plays, and science fiction/fantasy narratives are equally compelling. Wow. This compendium would benefit from two innovations in my opinion: (1) A Navigable menu (although the appended PDF is greatly appreciated); (2) A variety of narrators. Philippe Duquenoy is a very good reader - but his pacing is staccato and his voice quickly becomes background noise (unless there is dialogue.. Duquenoy is excellent at giving voice to characters). I sped up the reading to 1.50X with no loss of clarity and some improvement in the annoying lilting Duquenoy exhibits at the end of sentences (I recommend this technique).

TO THE PRODUCERS: The PDF is appreciated but off by a chapter..fix the menu so readers can search out specific entries, please; Adding another reader for some entries would keep listeners interested and elevate the overall performance considerably.

Altogether this collection is masterly with room for improvement. Even as presented, I give it a solid 3.5 stars out of 5. This collection is highly recommended.

tedious writing

I bought this collection for some of the horror stories and poetry, but it feels like a chore to get through it. many of the stories AR poorly planned; for example, the detective stories have copious amounts of exposition without a lot of action. I also dislike Edgar Allan Poe's writing style. although these are works of fiction, the writing style is better Suited for technical applications.
