Book 2 in the Eisenhorn series.
Inquisitor Eisenhorn must track down and defeat the forces who would destroy him or face the wrath of the Ordo Malleus....
Listen to It Because:
Eisenhorn's back in a classic thriller. What could be cooler than an inquisitor on the run for a crime he didn't commit? Not much. How much is Eisenhorn willing to compromise himself – and his closest friends – and risk his soul for a chance to clear his name?
The Story:
A century after his recovery of the alien Necroteuch, Gregor Eisenhorn is one of the Imperial Inquisition's most celebrated agents. But when a face from his past returns to haunt him, and he is implicated in a great tragedy that devastates the world of Thracian Primaris, Eisenhorn's universe crumbles around him. The daemon Cherubael is back, and seeks to bring the inquisitor to ruin - either by his death, or by turning him to the service of the Dark Gods.

The author's fascinating Inquisitor-Soldier/Agent protagonist continues a journey across the Galaxy battling Daemons and Chaos Forces - introducing readers to the captivating array of human/alien/cyborg beings that populate the WH40K Universe - all while telling an action-filled, compelling "wrongfully-accused" tale (with "Horn" trying to prove his innocence and avoid attempts at corrupting him).
As to presentation: Reader Toby Longworth exhibits some of the best narration that I have encountered (out of the hundreds of audiobooks in my library). His brilliant voice-acting complements a near-psychic understanding of the author's intended tone. He occasionally takes deep breaths that Black Library sound engineers struggle to soften (maybe he was too close to the microphone?), but this performance is otherwise pitch-perfect.
Altogether, 'Malleus' merits 8.5 stars out of 10. Don't hesitate to spend the Credit. On to Book Three..
[NOTE: The imagery attendant with nearly indestructible Daemons threatening agonizing torture/death - while laughing off what should be mortal wounds dripping gore & ichor - is worthy of Horror Literature: legitimately chilling.]
Impressive Series Continues..
