About this listen

'I can understand myself only in the light of inner happenings. It is these that make up the singularity of my life, and with these my autobiography deals' (Carl Gustav Jung)

In 1957, four years before his death, Carl Gustav Jung, psychiatrist and psychologist, began writing his life story. But what started as an exercise in autobiography soon morphed into an altogether more profound undertaking. The result is an absorbing piece of self-analysis: a frank statement of faith, philosophy, and principles from one of the great explorers of the human mind.

Covering everything from Sigmund Freud, analytical psychology, and Jungian dream interpretation to a forthright discussion of world myths and religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, and other religions, these final reflections on an extraordinary life are a fitting coda to the work of Carl Gustav Jung. It was Jung who observed and named key human characteristics such as the introvert, the extrovert, the animus, the anima, and other concepts such as archetypes (the wise old man, the mother), the collective unconscious, the complex and many more.

His studies took him into many fields—religion, anthropology, archeology and literature—which instructed his clinical work. This extraordinary breadth gave him a view of humanity and of culture that still resonates deeply.

Memories, Dreams, Reflections is a remarkable document showing a man of great depth, humility, and perspicacity. Once read, it is never forgotten.

Aniela Jaffé's introduction is read by Elizabeth Proud.

"Jung's single-minded humility, his passion to unearth truth, is one of the loveliest impressions to emerge from this absorbing and many-sided book." (The Times)

Intangible notions miraculously articulated

The narration was wonderful. A great listen.
It was a generous gift to be able to hear Jung's inner-most thoughts. The rich analysis he had on his own lived experiences were sobering reminders of the depths of "meaning" squeezed into every iota of our existence.

Helps to creat a more open mind

Great book for self reflection. It is about Jung’s life long journey to understand his unconscious self and his fascinating experiences with it. It was also really great to learn his perspectives on his own faith, Christianity, and his thoughts about many other religions. It is great to create more open mindedness and understanding. He does not speak negatively of any people group…. Remember that he was born in the 1800’s, so terms like “savages” may catch you off-guard. It is simply the language of the time and he has an immense regard for all peoples.

A great trip of the mind.

I am a big admirer of Jung. His ability to speak and reflect on the strange and unexpected experiences of the psyche is profound and refreshing. I felt understood in a lot of ways through reading his book. It's great to hear someone with his years of experience, talk about the joys and importance of solitude, in a world which sometimes seems to frown upon it. I loved hearing his experiences and ways of seeing the church through the eyes of his younger self. Being raised Catholic, it made me laugh to hear how he describes certain absurd ways of the church. I admire how much he examined his own mind and continued to question it even in later years. Highly recommend this book, if you're creative and a bit of an outsider within societal norms. #Audible1

Strange, tedious at times, but captivating in parts and overall worthwhile

I found it difficult to maintain concentration on what I was listening to in many parts.
However, I got the sense that I was listening to someone very smart and wise, and many points in the book contained deep and captivating paragraphs and thoughts.
Overall, I’m happy that I listened to it.

A must-listened-to-and-read for Carl Jung

I find this book mesmerizing. It helped me understand Jung’s theories. I will for sure listen again and will most likely buy the book to read it as well. The narrator is superb and sounds just like how Carl Jung would sound in my imagination. Highly recommended!

Remarkable

Worthy of another listen. Admittedly some of it went over my head, especially if passively listening. Lots to reflect on... and interesting telling of his-story, development of ideas, relationships, struggles and interpretations as well as a few non ordinary states of conciousness and how one came to terms with that when the atmosphere of the time was so staunch.
