About this listen

Declan Fitzgerald had always been the family maverick, but even he couldn't understand his impulse to buy a dilapidated mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans. All he knew was that ever since he saw Manet Hall, he'd been enchanted - and obsessed - with it. So when the opportunity to buy the house comes up Declan jumps at the chance to live out a dream.

Determined to restore Manet Hall to its former splendor, Declan begins the daunting renovation room by room, relying on his own labor and skills. But the days spent in total isolation in the empty house take a toll. He is seeing visions of days from a century past, and experiencing sensations of terror and nearly unbearable grief - sensations not his own, but those of a stranger. Local legend has it that the house is haunted, and with every passing day Declan's belief in the ghostly presence grows.

Only the companionship of the alluring Angelina Simone can distract him from the mysterious happenings in the house, but Angelina too has her own surprising connection to Manet Hall - a connection that will help Declan uncover a secret that's been buried for a hundred years.

What the critics say

"Narrator James Daniels depicts this romantic, suspenseful ghost story with finesse, switching Cajun accents as he navigates between Declan Fitzgerald and the restoration of Manet Hall in 2002, to betrayal, rape, and murder in the early 1900s." ( AudioFile)
"To add to the pleasure, tastefully choreographed, highly erotic lovemaking scenes are seamlessly woven into a novel that exemplifies storytelling at its finest." ( Booklist)

Great story, poor narration

I loved the book but almost quit listening a few times because the narrator was driving me crazy. The accents were not as good as most books that I have listened to and I found it took away from the story. #Audible1

Reincarnation, Romance & Mystery

#Audible1 Midnight Bayou is a feel good romance and mystery about reincarnation and ghosts in Louisiana. The lead character is Declan Fitzgerald, a handsome, wealthy lawyer from Boston that left his career and moved to the Bayou's. Declan buys a rundown mansion near New Orleans called Manet Hall and becomes fascinated by the house and it's history. While restoring the mansion Declan hears music, unexplainable noises and he has visions. Declan meets a beautiful, Cajun woman ( Angelina Simone) and set his mind that he's going to marry her. Angelina is stubborn and refuses to believe Declan can truly love her when so many men have left her the morning after. The story includes history, mystery, humor and most of all lots of surprises!.

I love Nora but this one was … okay

First off, SA warning in the first part of the book.

Second… the story was pretty good. It’s not one of Nora Roberts’ best books but definitely not bad. I listen to all of it. I like the supernatural parts of the book. The ending is a little lacking.

Great full I bought this on a sale

Very disappointing. Storyline was just ok, nothing very interesting. James did a great job as Decklen but awful as Angelina. It was a cross between a German accent and an Irish accent. Much better Nora Roberts out there.
