Phssthpok the Pak had been traveling for most of his thirty-two thousand years. His mission was to save, develop, and protect the group of Pak breeders sent out into space some two and a half million years before.

Brennan was a Belter, the product of a fiercely independent, somewhat anarchic society living in, on, and around an outer asteroid belt. The Belters were rebels, one and all, and Brennan was a smuggler. The Belt worlds had been tracking the Pak ship for days, and Brennan figured to meet that ship first.

He was never seen again - at least not by those alive at the time.

I've always liked this novel. I had been reading Larry Niven's works since "Ringword" appeared and read several of his short story collections and following novels since then. I realize not everyone is a fan of this author but I've enjoyed all of his works so far. This is one of his better ones, being part of his "Known Space" cycle. The Potectors are an intriguing and frightening alien race. The science in this novel is up-to-date as of the early 1980s, when it was written. The producer is very good, excellent with the voices of men, women and aliens, plus a few different accents. The story moves along well and it has one the most moving final lines I've read in a long time. Please enjoy!

I have read the book several times, and now I have the audio book, which I frequently listen to at night. This story is essential to appreciating Niven's Ringworld series, and other tales in that universe. Niven has an amazing ability to think like an alien well enough to convince you that aliens are different from us, and sometimes similar to us. This story really crosses the bridge from alien to human.
