John Kretschmer
About this listen
After sailing 300,000 miles and weathering dozens of storms in all the world's oceans, John Kretschmer has plenty of stories and advice to share. John's offshore training passages sell out a year in advance, and his entertaining presentations are popular at boat shows and yacht clubs all over the English-speaking world. John's talent for storytelling enchants his audience as it soaks up the lessons he learned during his often challenging voyages. Now you can take a seat next to John - at a lesser cost - and get the knowledge you need to fulfill your own dream of blue-water adventure.
In Sailing a Serious Ocean, John tells you what to expect when sailing the oceans and shows how to sail safely across them. His tales of storm encounters and other examples of extreme seamanship will help you prepare for your journey and give you confidence to handle any situation - even heavy weather. Through his personal stories, John will guide you through the whole process of choosing the right boat, outfitting with the right gear, planning your route, navigating the ocean, and understanding the nuances of life at sea.
Our oceans are beautiful yet unpredictable - water that is at one moment a natural mirror for the glowing sun can turn into a foamy, raging wall of fury. John knows our oceans, and he is one of the best teachers of taming and enjoying them. Before you set off across the big blue, turn to John for his inspirational stories and hard-learned advice and discover the serious sailor in you.

Story
Veteran sailor and writer Christian Williams invites us along once again on a 5,000-mile voyage of discovery around the North Pacific. Equipped with a new boat, a well-stocked toolbox, and the entire history of philosophic thought, he takes us as crew through squalls and calms deep into a laboratory of the universe that exists only out of sight of land. Funny, erudite, and at times deeply personal, Philosophy of Sailing explores who we are and how encounters with the unknown can be a path to revelation and joy.

Story
A "normal" Caribbean hurricane travels from east to west, but Lenny was anything but normal. Spawned south of Cuba in 1999, this late-season storm defied all predictions by moving steadily east toward the Leeward Islands. Eventually building almost to Category 5 strength, Lenny squatted for two days between the Virgin Islands and St. Martin, whipping the ocean with 155 mile-per-hour winds and sixty-foot seas.

Story
Rick's recent appearance on Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild chronicled his budget lifestyle and adventures aboard Calypso, and introduced the idea of budget sailing to a whole new audience - an audience who may have never considered the possibility that such a dream could be made a reality, on such a small amount of money. This book is for them and for any experienced sailors who want to cast off the yoke of consumerist yachting and get back to what really matters at sea.

Scared To Life
After hearing this book, one would expect my review title to be “Scared To Death.” Certainly, one could walk away from this accounting of his travels and experiences and never want to step aboard anything that floats. It’s raw. It’s revealing. The book is unapologetic and so overly lucid and at times so candid in bits of personal prophecy, philosophy and prose that you feel you are there with John and his crew on every wind.
How can one listen to this audiobook by Kretschmer and not realize that no matter how short or long it takes each of us to arrive at our final port-of-call, (death being the inevitable permanent stop) there is a path to getting there that is only achieved by living.
John has revealed through his chronicles that life before dying is best “lived” through experiences that invigorate, stimulate and prevent us from attempting to protract our mortal fate and flaws through materialistic comforts that keep us safe yet unfulfilled in our commercialized and social-isolated throw away society.
Upon concluding this audiobook I am attempting to figure a way to circumnavigate from Halifax, Nova Scotia around our current circumstances of the 2020 covid-19 pandemic and join John Kretschmer and Quetzal and yes, be “Scared To Life.”

Dream material
An interesting collection of yarns about long distance yachting. Occasionally a little repetitive. A collection of advice and information on many aspects of boats and gear (slightly better suited to print format). Left me wanting to take a deep water voyage with the author!
