About this listen

You're not going home. You're not going anywhere. You're mine now.

Growing up in a deeply troubled family, 15-year-old Anna felt lost and alone in the world. So when a friendly taxi driver befriended her, Anna welcomed the attention, and agreed to go home with him to meet his family. She wouldn't escape for over a decade.

Held captive by a sadistic pedophile, Anna was subjected to despicable levels of sexual abuse and torture. The unrelenting violence and degradation resulted in numerous miscarriages, and the birth of four babies.... each one stolen away from Anna at birth.

Her salvation arrived 13 years too late, but despite her shattered mind and body, Anna finally managed to flee. This is her harrowing, yet uplifting, true story of survival.

Contains mature themes.

Horrific story...I almost couldn't finish.

Her story is absolutely the hardest book to read. After 30min I turned it off and swore not to finishnas it was so disturbing but I had to know that she got out and was safe. I have to admit I fast forwarded through parts I couldn't handle and had to finish it in one day because I couldn't let that evil man live in my head for too long. She is so strong for enduring that and still being able to move forward and survive. I don't understand the end. When you read it you will understand. Anna, I hope found peace.

Disturbing

Anna’s story is the most disturbing memoir I have listened to. At one point I didn’t think I could finish listening to her story. I couldn’t take any more of her torture. My heart bled for her and what happened to her during 13 years a captive angered me, but I needed to hear she was able to escape.
The story of her nana’s love and how that love became her salvation through the terror.
The performance was excellent. Clearly expressing the emotions of love, hate and fear.
Like Anna, I hope to numb myself of her story so it does not haunt my dreams.

definitely worth the read.

narrator was fantastic, the book was well written and engaging. Hey story was incredibly hard to listen to, all the abuse described shocking. I finished listening to this quickly, I would play it while driving, walking and making dinner.

I would recommend the title.

The Stuff of Nightmares

Horrifying and haunting, this true story of kidnapping, enslavement and torture is worse than any work of fiction. That human beings are capable of such evil is just mind boggling, but so is the capacity of the human spirit to endure and heal. I hope the author continues to have a beautiful, fulfilling life after this unimaginable ordeal, and I pray that the sadists who held her captive will one day answer for their crimes. Well written and performed, this audio book will stay with me forever.

Almost too difficult to listen to

Anna's story is so heartbreaking. At times I felt like I would have to switch it off, and yet I couldn't stop listening. The narrator did a great job too.

Wow!

This book is absolutely chilling. I enjoy intense books, but this is incredibly horrific and graphic. It’s painful to listen to but a riveting story. It has a great ending and brings awareness to tragic things that happen in the world.

It'll keep you captivated to the end!

At first I was honestly horrified because after each time I'd listed to more of the story, I began to develop a deep loathing for the behavior of her captor and his family, and couldn't help but wonder...is that a religious thing? Are most Muslims like this towards women? But that's not fair because there are bad people in EVERY religion, and of every race. I think the most shocking thing to me was that while one man was responsible for her kidnapping and torturing her, his whole family allowed it to happen! I became frustrated as the book went on because you desperately prayed for her escape, and as a reader I couldn't understand how she could let so many opportunities pass her by (like hospital trips, police coming by, etc) but I kept reminding myself that she was mentally broken down and terrified. Then (without giving away any spoilers) when it did finally reach the point of her escape I felt let down, like the build up (as a story) was so intense but her actual escape was written so quickly, I was left feeling, "That's it?" However, once she'd gotten away, it was interesting to see her try and tackle life again afterwards. I would have greatly wished for more about what happened to him and his family, and even her children, but I know that's not easy because it's hard to know what ACTUALLY happened after she left as she wasn't there. All in all would I recommend this book? YES! I hope Anna has a healthy and happy life, she certainly deserves it! She deserves never to have been put through any of this in the first place, what PURE EVIL is in this world?! I wanted to rescue her myself and take her in, and care for her, I think anyone who reads this would want to do that for her too. I'm glad she wrote this book, her story deserves to be told. SHE deserves to be heard! And loved! And I thank her for her bravery in writing it. I would think this book would not only help other survivors, but also to help educate the world on the true horrors that can go on in a neighboring house without anyone really knowing.

Unbelievable

This story was the most horrific thing I have ever heard of. The life that Anna Ruston was forced to endure for so many years was so hard to hear. It made me so sad for her. The story was well told. It's hard to believe that such evil exists out there. I am glad that she was able to finally get away and tell her story to the world.

Interesting

Well done but her story is one of the hardest and most graphic I’ve ever listened to. This book could be triggering to many. Anna’s story is an inspiration and the fact that she escaped such a monster is a testament to her strength.
