About this listen

When Keladry of Mindelan is chosen by the legendary Lord Raoul to be his squire, the conservatives of the realm hardly think she's up to the job. Kel quickly proves her ability as a jouster, warrior, and guardian of a fiery griffin, ultimately earning respect and admiration among the men, as well as the affection of a fellow squire.

In addition to coping with the challenges of a new romance and a life in the royal guard, Kel must also prepare for the infamous "Ordeal", the last challenge that stands between her and her dream of knighthood.

Kel is an inspiration

I have read this book quite a few times, there is something about it and Lady Knight, the book that follows, that really just exhibit how much of a stride Tamora Pierce had gotten into at this point in her career. Listening to it for the first time, instead of reading, was a very enjoyable experience. The narrator finally seems to have given up on giving Kel a weird voice and because of this, the narration came across far better than it had on previous books. I hope she continued this for the next book. As to the story, Kel as a character is quite simply an inspiration. Her sense of justice, her unwavering determination and dedication are all attributes that are commendable. And the scene at the end of the book, a long overdue meeting between two Lady Knights...Alanna's words to Kel made me tear up. So poignant and heartfelt. I love that in this book we really get to know the intracies of some already well established characters who existed before Kel's story. It's so great when an author continues to give their characters depths, even when they are not the focus of the story.

My Journey With Kel

Squire has become my favourite of the Quartet so far (I still have Lady Knight to listen to /read so that might change). I have really enjoyed the Protector of the Small books and Keladry. I love that Tamora choose to write her second Lady Knight non-gifted to show that even without magic girls can be knights just as much as boys. It took me awhile to get used to Bernadette Dunne's way of narrating but now I love her and couldn't imagine anyone else narrating these books.
