Publisher's Summary

When Cora attends her sister's birthday party, she expects at most a hangover or a walk of shame. She doesn't anticipate a stolen wallet, leaving her stranded and dependent on Dean—her arch nemesis and ultimate thorn in her side.

And she really doesn't anticipate waking up in shackles in a madman's basement.

To make matters worse, Dean shares the space in his own set of chains.

After fifteen years of teasing, insults, and practical jokes, the ultimate joke seems to be on them. The two people who always thought they'd end up killing each other must now work together if they want to survive.

But Cora and Dean have no idea their abductor has a plan for them. A plan that will alter the course of their relationship, blur the line between hate and love, and shackle them together with far more than just chains.

Contains mature themes.

Surprising

I started this book with a bit of skepticism expecting it to be like most dark romances. I could never have been more wrong. This book speaks to my soul and latches on in such a way I have never experienced before. It made me feel like you are right there along with each character and your heart is fighting right along side them. Fear, hope, and the journey to not only love another but yourself.
Easily one of the best books I have ever had the privilege to read.

Emotional and Real

This was my first book by Jennifer Hartmann and I couldn’t put it down. Although some parts were quite hard to read and I found myself crying more times than not, the entire story was beautifully written. Dean and Cora went thought hell together but outside of that something beautiful began. You could feel their love for each other and the peace they gave the other person. Always connected by those tragic events but they both learned to heal and to move on with their lives. I highly recommend this book!

Like nothing I have "read" before

What an incredible story! I couldn't stop listening needing to know what's going to happen next. Is it a dark romance - yes, is it super spicy - not really... not in an overly explicit way. But it is a very emotional. I strongly recommend this book!

Emotional roller-coaster

No BS. Got to the story right from the start and took your emotions along with it.
Loved the MMC and MFC (even if she could be frustrating and stubborn at times but realistically so).
Beautifully written. Story moved at perfect pace. Sexy and 🌶🌶🌶, laughs, tears, bursting joy, anxiety, fear, all of it. Read it in two days.

I would have like more back and forth between male and female narration vs switching only at each Part (1,2,3 etc) but they were both great.
Dean is the perfect book BF 🥰

This book broke me in the most beautiful way 💔

This book was heart breaking in the most beautiful of ways. It was dark, at times horrifying and hard to read, but ultimately a beautiful story of experiencing trauma, overcoming it, falling in love under the worst of circumstances, and healing.
I thought this book captured beautifully the messy emotions and aftermath of surviving a traumatic event.

This book was beautifully written and one I’ll likely never forget. This book is raw, emotional, painful, uncomfortable, provocative and hopeful.

deff not for everyone

i actually think their story is really sweet... it's very sad and i balled when the dog died... (it's in the trigger warnings) but if your looking for a spicey book, this book is 1.5/5 spicey! it's more about growing after a traumatic experience, dont go in this thinking it's a spicey fun time...! get ready to get your heart ripped out multiple times!

Heavy AF

This one was not for me.
Another overinflated booktok rec.
So heavy and emotional and unenjoyable.
However, narrators were incredible and did a great job capturing the emotions they were portraying.

I almost DNF’d this multiple times, it was really hard to stay engaged,
especially when Cora was being so wishy washy and hot and cold with Dean.
It felt incredibly repetitive and that got annoying.
The sister storyline was ridiculous, and was only there to add more drama, and I hated the bonus chapter.

I would have liked more from Deans POV in part 3.
Deans POV is what kept me reading.

The spice was sub-par as well, I’m really not sure why people are raving about this book.

This felt more like a dark crime drama than a dark romance.
I personally wouldn’t classify this as a dark romance. Barely even a romance.
More like a trauma story.
