Publisher's Summary

Welcome to the summer of 1985 in Philadelphia, when the city was rocked—in almost every sense of the word—by two unprecedented events: Mayor W. Wilson Goode’s May 13 decision to bomb the headquarters of MOVE, a controversial Philadelphia-based radical communal organization, and the July 13 Live Aid concert, where international rock royalty convened in Philly to raise money for victims of the Ethiopian famine.

Separated by just two months and eight miles, these events would showcase both the best and the worst of the so-called City of Brotherly Love: One would raise millions of dollars for famine victims in Africa, while the other would lead to the death of 11 members of MOVE, including five children, who had all taken the last name of their leader, John Africa. The bombing led to a fire that was allowed to burn for hours, resulting in the destruction of a middle-class African American neighborhood. Those wounds remain raw more than 35 years later.

Created by Chris Morrow, produced by Kevin Hart and Charlamagne tha God’s SBH Productions, and narrated by Hart, a Philadelphia native, Summer of '85 marks the first attempt to connect these two events and detail the incredible irony (and tragedy) of Philadelphia hosting a benefit for Africa the same summer it bombed a thriving African American neighborhood. Featuring candid interviews with participants such as Bob Geldof, Patti LaBelle, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Mike Africa Jr., the series explores the complex history that resulted in these outlier events paired by proximity and a combustible mix of ego, altruism, prejudice, utopian dreams, and human frailty.

Moving and eye-opening

Though I’m a late-90’s baby, I’m really into history, especially historical events that involve race and gender. I’m sure anyone that has listened to this podcast can attest to this, but this series has opened up and painted a bigger and entailed picture of what happened BEFORE one of the biggest events (Live Aid Concert) that took place in the summer of 1985, along with stories associated between those two major events. This shows how and why history would be multi-faceted, and can be found BEYOND our history books!

Excellent educational content.

I never would have stopped on this choice of Kevin Hart had not been the narrator. As a mid 40s non American white female I knew nothing about the summer of 85 or the history of live aid. This was excellent and informative and I wish there was more. I feel like just the surface was scratched and would love this to be made in to more. I’m sure there are many more like me who would love to learn more.

A Desire to feel Free, Without Fear and Judgement

"Summer of '85" is a well written story, alongside a strong narrative that was informative, without being derogatory.
The many kind-hearted souls around the world who, (to this very day) continue the battle, to ease the struggles for others, regardless of their color or creed and to put an end to tyranny and its power-hungry dictators, (both foreign and benign)
Since I was only 8 years old during the Summer of '85, I knew very little about the politics around the world.
What was interesting, there ARE things I remember. I remember the coordinated concerts, here and across the pond. But what stands out is "We are the World" and the introduction and the making of it.

Being able to put these experiences on a timeline are pretty cool.

Unlike anything else

I’ve heard it a couple times and find the story and the fact that it’s based on a true story with live inserts of interviews fantastic!

Passable Documentary with an Agenda

This podcast-styled exposé tackles the dual subjects of:
• the MOVE crisis in Philadelphia - the bombing (by Police!!) of entrenched anarchists in a Black Neighborhood (featuring audio clips of testimony from survivors/concerned figures) and
• the motivation, set-up, and execution of the LIVE-AID concert to raise money for a devastating Ethiopian famine. Audio interviews with chief organizer Bob Geldof lend authenticity to the information given.

Told in eight 30-40 minute "episodes", the narrative with regards to MOVE is definitely one-sided.. but doesn't appear to hold back on criticism of all sides - listeners can sift out what happened from news reports and numerous testimonials from all sides. The behind-the-scenes concert discussion is largely focussed on Black performer contributions (Rap and R&B performers), but the interviews with those artists are excellent.

Philadelphia native Kevin Hart was a great choice of reader - providing spot-on diction, timbre, and cadence and doing a very nice voice-over job. The audio quality is furthermore exemplary and production values from Audible Originals Inc are polished and top-notch.

Taken altogether, this recording is a nice distraction for a few hours - discussing (in-depth) a couple of of pivotal events in Philadelphia history.. ones which tweaked my memory but I actually didn't know much about. It's actually disappointing that it gets overtly raciopolitical in the final two episodes. Regardless, this 5 out of 10 star product was a worthwhile thought-provoking option - especially when offered for "free" with my Audible subscription. If they ask for a Credit, you could defensibly invest it on 'Summer Of 85', but I would support you if you spent it on something else. Overall, it's "average".
