About this listen

Less than fifty thousand years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as "the greatest riddle in human history," all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers.

In Supernatural Graham Hancock sets out to investigate this mysterious "before-and-after moment" and to discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to the modern human mind. His quest takes him on a detective journey from the stunningly beautiful painted caves of prehistoric France, Spain, and Italy to rock shelters in the mountains of South Africa, where he finds extraordinary Stone Age art. He uncovers clues that lead him to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to drink the powerful hallucinogen Ayahuasca with shamans, whose paintings contain images of "supernatural beings" identical to the animal-human hybrids depicted in prehistoric caves. Hallucinogens such as mescaline also produce visionary encounters with exactly the same beings. Scientists at the cutting edge of consciousness research have begun to consider the possibility that such hallucinations may be real perceptions of other "dimensions." Could the "supernaturals" first depicted in the painted caves be the ancient teachers of mankind? Could it be that human evolution is not just the "meaningless" process that Darwin identified, but something more purposive and intelligent that we have barely begun to understand?

Loving all that is Hancock

I have always believed in the possibility of anything. I prefer to appreciate all angles with all possibilities. Graham Hancock never ceases to amaze me. Much of what he has written about in this book, alignes with some of my personal experiences. His other topics I find equally intriguing and for that reason, I will open my mind the all the possibilities that Graham wishes to write about and discuss. Thank you for all that you do ( although, I do love his voice, so I love it when he narrates his work)

Easily Grahams best work!

An incredible book, such an amazing dive into the history of psychedelics across all different cultures. So eye opening. Truly one of best books ive ever read. Just wish Graham would be the one to narrate it.

Fascinating, though redundant at times

I enjoyed this book. The reader had a soothing, sage-like voice, and the connections that the author made were fascinating. Near the end it seemed that he started to repeat many of the points, and left a couple questions unanswered, but most of these questions really can't be answered anyway. Overall, a fascinating and trippy talk about the deep truth regarding spirits, Gods, and the mysteries about mystical human experience.

Life changing perspectives

This book opened my mind to a who new realm of information and connected the dots on many of the experiences I have had in my life. The book is very well presented and logically laid out in a narrative that keeps you interested the whole time. This is the third book I have read from graham hancock and it might be the best (I read fingerprints and magicians of the gods)

Mind-blowing

I really enjoyed the book.
This is my first attempt at an audio book. I have to say the task is harrowing but at the same time enthralling, if you can find consistent pockets of time to keep you going.
There was one particular chapter around two thirds in, that literally blew my mind...
I am even more intrigued about the psychedelic cultures throughout this world.
I recommend this book for any who have an open mind...
