About this listen

There are millions of stories in the city - some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of those things as he draws listeners into his life in the city as a young boy, introducing his indomitable grandfather, also a "piano man"; his single mother, a struggling singer; and the heroes, villains, and everyday saints and sinners who make up the fabric of the metropolis in which they live - and who will change the course of Jonah’s life forever.

Welcome to The City, a place of evergreen dreams where enchantment and malice entwine, where courage and honor are found in the most unexpected corners and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

Another enjoyable Koontz story.

As a long time fan of Dean Koontz I enjoyed this story. While I’ve enjoyed some of his other books a little more this was still worth the time and I enjoyed the characters.

Atypical Koontz Offering

This book starts as a fairly straightforward Coming-Of-Age tale set in the late 1960s - populated with the type of quirky characters that fans of Dean Koontz expect - but evolves into a supernatural-infused exploration of morals, attitudes, and relationships between families, friends, and neighbors of 9-year-old music prodigy 'Jonah Ellington Basie Hines Eldridge Wilson Hampton Armstrong Kirk'. 'The City' incorporates Mr Koontz's oustanding vocabulary/prose, mind's-eye vivid description, and unparalleled imagination - but never really settles on a plot (albeit introducing some "mystery" elements and a criminal conspiracy storyline). It's different.

As to presentation: Korey Jackson turns in a noteworthy performance - backed up with exemplary technical support from Recorded Books Inc. He reads too slowly (listen to this audiobook at 1.25X), but Jackson's diction, timbre, cadence, tone, and voice-acting demonstrate evident interest and a dedication to his craft.

You can find better examples of Dean Koontz writing - and this odd drama is honestly aimless compared to what he typically offers - but if you can get the book as a 'Plus' option, it's a 6.5/10-star listen.. no waste of time by any measure.

Another great tale by Dean Koontz

I am a huge fan of this author and was surprised at how different this story was. I loved the way it was presented. Mainly from the voice and innocence of a child. I really enjoyed the minute details that fleshed out the characters and the whispers of the supernatural throughout. This is truly a great story.
