What the critics say

"A strong sense of place, a credible plot, and deft dialogue lift Johnson's good-humored debut novel." (Publishers Weekly)
"Johnson, who lives in Ucross, Wyoming, knows the Western landscape well, and creates stunning and violent scenes of the Rocky Mountains." (Bookmarks) "We in the West have a major new talent on our hands." (The Denver Post)

Caution! It’s a gateway drug into the series!

Great novel and great characters that you fall in love with. Love George Guidall and the audio life he gives to the characters. When I read the books, his voices are the one that I speak in my head.

Fantastic start to an amazing series

Loved it. Great storyline and it felt like I was there in Wyoming, and I think I'm a little in love with Walt Longmire.

A very dark, cold novel

This is a much darker story than I'd expected from watching the television series. It reminded me much more of "No Country for Old Men" than anything else.

average murder mystery

there is nothing great here. the best part of the book is the characters who are admittedly engaging. however the plot is fairly trait murder mystery. particular areas I did not appreciate were Supernatural themes, Police Department with only four members and a alcoholic Sheriff battling personal demons, and finally a surprising and poorly chosen antagonist who predictably Phil in many missing plot points in a final confession.
