About this listen

Powerhouse adult fantasy author R. A. Salvatore and Erika Lewis deliver a sweeping, action-packed, romantic pre-Arthurian tale of the origins of magic (and Merlin), perfect for fans of Falling Kingdoms and Seraphina.

Magic needs a spark.

And Maggie’s powers are especially fickle. With no one to help her learn to control her magic, the life debt that she owes stretches eternally over her head, with no way to repay it.

Until she meets Griffin, the king’s champion, infamous for hunting down the draignochs that plague their kingdom.

Neither has any idea of the destiny that they both carry, or that their meeting will set off a chain of events that will alter every aspect of the life they know - and all of history thereafter.

This epic, romantic tale will enchant listeners and draw them into a thrilling world of star-crossed lovers, magic, destiny, and the paths we choose.

Mostly the people and beast

what I mostly liked about it was that I like the good guys and also, if there wasn’t the bad guys, it wouldn’t be a story . The thing I mostly didn’t like was probably her scar because how much it hurt at the beginning .

Amazing book

Awesome story!! Super sad there are not more books on the series! I was thinking it was a trilogy the entire time haha, then when I finished and went to get the second one right away, it didn’t exist :(

Love it

The story is very well written. Love the strong female lead, and the conflicting emotions of the two main characters.

The plot is consistant, and it's an interesting spin on the origin of Merlin.

A good YA fantasy

This story is more or less in line with Young Adult fiction of its kind. Though that alignment also means the usual "I don't know why I feel this way about this person" sort of thing is repeated several times.

It's an interesting low fantasy setting. The story beats are pretty standard, which isn't automatically a bad thing. With RA as a writer though, I expected a little bit more from the plot.

It also just sort of has action happen quickly. I followed along early for the character development. I did like that scenes seemed to be well described and paced nicely in general. However any of the action sequences are just sort of done in a sentence or two. There's no exciting payoff on any of the plot threads.

If you're looking for simple YA content. Go for it. If that's not your thing, skip it.
