About this listen
New from the best-selling author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle! Take Stephen King horror, a Sherlock Holmes-esque detective, and add a dash of Pirates of the Caribbean for an utterly unique murder mystery on the high seas.
Samuel Pipps is the greatest detective of his day...but now he’s a prisoner, accused of an unknown crime by one of the world’s most powerful men. Along with his faithful sidekick, Arent Hayes, he’s sailing back to Amsterdam from the East Indies, where he’ll stand trial. But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. Still shackled in his cell, Pipps sends Hayes to solve a mystery that connects every passenger on board. All hope is pinned on Hayes solving the mystery, but when he goes missing, Pipps is faced with the most dangerous puzzle of his career.
All the while, voices whisper to him in the dark. But are those whispers clues? Warnings? Or the devil himself?
The Devil and the Dark Water has been optioned for television, and Turton's debut novel, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, is being adapted as a seven-part series for Netflix.

Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts. A frightening pattern is emerging, but what do these nine people have in common?

A good listen but not a great one.
His previous work in Evelyn Hardcastle was such an amazing experience that kept me listening right until the end, trying to figure everything out myself. Sadly, while not a bad listen, this book did not reach the levels as before.
Still a good time but here's hoping for another round of Evelyn in the future.

Brilliant mystery on the high seas
I loved this book! It was one of a handful of audiobooks I’ve listened to this year that we’re engaging and intriguing from start to finish. The narration was fantastic. The story was beautifully woven and suspenseful. The occult elements gave it a spooky atmosphere. 10/10 would recommend for historical mystery adventure fans.

Another ball hit out of the park!
As always, Stuart Turton brings a delightful story to the table, and I devour it with great gluttony. The narrator has a lovely voice as well.

Stuart Turton does it again!
Really enjoyed this one, I’d argue it was better than The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Can’t wait to see what Turton does next!

Keeps you guessing
I enjoyed this novel and the narration. I certainly hope there are further novels with these characters. I enjoy historical novels and especially ship novels with moving parts and characters as it only provides challenges as was depicted throughout. I highly recommend this author and hope this narrator does the next novel as well. I did not go into detail about this novel as I dont want to give away the mystery!!!

Amazing writing
Stuart Turton has very quickly become one of my favourite writers; the way he crafts phrases, metaphors and plots is so artful. With each of his books I’ve ended up pausing multiple times to note down lines that I don’t want to forget. Definitely a darker read but so great!
