About this listen

Two young British students, Nazim Jamal and Rafi Hassan, vanish without a trace. The police write them off as runaways, but seven years later, Nazim's grief-stricken mother is still unconvinced.

Jenny Cooper is finally settling into her role as coroner for the Severn Valley; the ghosts of her past banished to the sidelines once more. But as an inquest into Nazim's disappearance gets underway, the stink of corruption and conspiracy becomes clear. As the pressure from above increases, a code of silence is imposed and events begin to spiral out of control, pushing Jenny to the breaking point. For how could she have known that by unravelling the mysteries of the disappeared, she would begin to unearth her own buried secrets?

Best Narrator Ever

I enjoyed this story more than the first in in the series. Jenny Cooper is a very complex lead character who is sometimes difficult to like. The plot is excellent providing the reader with a lot to think about. The star of this audiobook is Sian Thomas who does a incredible job bringing the cast of characters to life.

The twist and turns of the plot

Another good story from Joy Ellis… It’s beneficial if you read the books and sequence

Excellent timely mystery!

This was an excellent, timely mystery by M. R. Hall, wonderfully narrated by Sian Thomas! For the sleuthing that she does, this protagonist needs to invest in some proper shoes/boots and pant suits, and keep her car in working condition (washer fluid) with some better tires for the snow and ice. I want to counsel her that her relationship with her son and care of both of them at home may improve by something as simple as he suggested: ordering groceries online and having them delivered! A teenage boy needs to be fed to keep him in a good mood, and she needs to eat properly. One less thing to be anxious about! Otherwise, I'm loving the novels, and can't wait to go on to the next one to find out what is behind the secret in her past!

Well written and deep

Excellent plot, storytelling and filling out of characters. Unlike so many books read lately, I felt drawn into each character through the depth of storytelling.

Great Mystery Story.

I loved the interesting first book with its twists and turns, and more so in the end. This second book was more of an Americanized mystery, with our protagonist running around to seek the truth. You can tell by these car racing, man handling and threatening, I thought it was another episode coming from our American friends. Still, our protagonist became a heroine in the end. Then, M. R. Hall added something extra—. Glad, I got the third book waiting for me. Recommended!

Interesting storyline

This was a good story, but it could’ve ended at about the six hour mark. The ending was abrupt and a disappointment.

Unnecessary and constant tension

It has taken me two books to realize what bothers me about this series. After all, the mysteries are complex and unravel in way I should enjoy. The problem is that the book has constant tension, from mental health issues, fights with family and lovers, interfering authorities, bad guys, good guys etc. It makes the entire listening experience tense and not that enjoyable. The books would be better if there were both calm and tense bits.

Where’s the action?

So boring I couldn’t continue. This audible started out with some promise but while I waited for some action to take place it just got more boring.
