About this listen

For countless millennia, the dwarves of the have defended the stone gateway into Girdlegard. Many and varied foes have hurled themselves against the portal and died attempting to breach it. No man or beast has ever succeeded. Until now...

Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith labors contentedly in the land of Ionandar, the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. Although he does not want for friends, Tungdil is very much aware that he is alone - indeed, he has not so much as set eyes on another dwarf. But all that is about to change. Sent out into the world to deliver a message and reacquaint himself with his people, the young foundling finds himself thrust into a battle for which he has not been trained. Not only his own safety, but the life of every man, woman, and child in Girdlegard depends upon his ability to embrace his heritage. Although he has many unanswered questions, Tungdil is certain of one thing: No matter where he was raised, he is a true dwarf.

And no one has ever questioned the courage of the Dwarves.

A great book and I recommended to read

The story of the Dwarves is extremely well written, and I highly recommend it to everyone I know that enjoys the race of dwarfs.
Matthew Wolf does a great job narrating the book as well.

Worth Every Minute

My first auditable book and it got me completely hooked. I spend over 60 hours a month driving and this makes that time fly by and I’m even sadden to get to my destination for I don’t want the stories to stop.

This.

This is what I'm looking for in a fantasy story. It's rich in character development, the story is interesting and the world is believable.

My only criticisms are minor. For some reason it keeps giving dates. Totally unnecessary. I understand that it's occasionally time jumping for the sake of travel not bogging down the book, but it's used FAR too often. At one point a date is given as they pivot perspective in an active battle from one character to another. It also then suffers from a very common issue in audio books with confusing story division where a chapter may be an hour and a half long but truly it has a dozen chapters within it. So, if you happen to fall asleep with a timer (or even without!) you'll have to really search hard with a scroll bar that's got too much loaded into it to find your restart point. Subsections with audiobook splits and appropriate titles that aren't just vague dates is really just good form. Aside from that, it would be nice if some names weren't too similar. The continent and a king to be have the same name almost. A male character and a female love interest have the same name. It's really kind of annoying when there's action and suddenly a talked about character has a very different voice because it's actually the other character in the scene.

That all aside though, please read this. Even if you don't have credits, I'd buy this book. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Good story, lacklustre performance

I’ve read this book before & enjoyed it - I thought I’d give the audiobook a go since I wanted to revisit this series. I really couldn’t get into this narration.

Could not get past the prelude

Written like someone in grade 10 was telling about the game they played last night. Full of the typical, old, tired cliches.
I have no idea how this could be a best seller
