Publisher's Summary

Flynn was only a teenager when her parents were killed in a terrible accident. Too young to lose her parents, too young to take on responsibility for her younger sister Kaiya, too young to protect Kaiya from the harshness of their new lives in the following years. Desperate to help her sister, Flynn reaches out to Willa Tomlinson, a grief counsellor renowned for helping her patients cope with profound loss. Under Willa’s influence and care, Kaiya finally seems to turn a corner, joining the climate action collective that Willa leads. Kaiya’s passion is ignited and she immerses herself in the group, leaving on frequent camping trips in the West Australian bush. But when a raging bushfire sweeps through the bushland near Margaret River, Kaiya fails to return with the rest of the group.

Noah is no stranger to loss or to violence, but these days, he’s more interested in helping people develop the skills to defend themselves than seeking out fights of his own. When Flynn enters his life, desperate to find out what really happened to her sister, a friendship sparks, and Noah finds himself agreeing to help her. To do so, he’ll need to infiltrate Willa’s cultish collective at the fireground.

In this new Original from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Ruin and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, Flynn and Noah must reckon with their pasts and fight to find the answers they seek before Kaiya’s trail burns out.

Great characters, suspense, and in the end, hope

I enjoyed the different narrative lines and the main characters’ resilience and resolve. I also looked up maps of Western Australia to check out the different settings. Great read.

Another good read

I recently found Dervla’s books in September and it’s only taken me a month to finish almost all of them. Her writing, her characters, the plot twists, the stories. I think she is my new favourite author! This book in particular was incredible. I was captivated from start to finish. 10/10!

Another good one!

I’ve read or listened to all Dervla McTiernan’s books and have enjoyed them all. This one is a bit differet and reflects her new Australian home. The story started a bit slowly as the backgrounds of the characters were explored, but it soon picked up speed and tension. She has incorporated the current worldwide anxiety about climate which makes this book relevant today and in the future. I’d love to know where she got her information about martial arts and self- defence. It was new info for me and may have opened my eyes to it as athleticism and not just thuggery.
I must admit I found the book a bit disturbing at times but I think that was an indication of having been drawn in to the story and characters.
Looking forward to her next one!

Dervla McTiernan is a master

I have read most of this author’s novels and she never disappoints. Well rounded characters, original plot lines and subtle weaving in of current issues. One of my top ten authors!

Enjoyable listen as always

I love McTiernan’s style. She builds her characters such that I become connected and need to know what is going to happen to them. Her details and her attention to providing her material with incredible description draws me in every time.

Absolutely Fabulous

I’ve tried to find and read quite a few of her books.
I love the way she writes and the intrigue she puts into all the books. This is just one more wonderful read and I enjoyed every single Chapter ❣️❣️

Original plot line

The reality of many children’s lives, but with interventions from helpful safe adults. A bit of suspense, but also justice.

Ikay

I enjoyed the first part of this book when it was telling the stories of Flynn and Noah when they were young. It began to be less plausible in later chapters, especially how Noah “rescued” a woman from her abusive husband; the whole sequence, seemed unlikely. I considered abandoning the book at that point but was interested to see how the whole thing would be resolved.
This book is not up to the Cormack series, which I loved, but miles better than The Murder Rule.

Unusual

I love this author and always read her books. This one took a lot longer to get going and I feel like the character building was a bit inconsistent. I missed the land based detail from her previous work. Still a solid story though.

I had high hopes.......

I was captivated to begin with but then the writing became so shallow and implausible that I just couldn't finish it.
