About this listen
David Baldacci's remarkable detective Amos Decker - the man who can forget nothing - was first introduced in the sensational number-one New York Times best seller Memory Man. Now Decker returns in a stunning new novel....
The Fix
Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself.
Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter - a family man with a successful consulting business - and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.
Enter Harper Brown. An agent of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she orders Decker to back off the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it.
But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security. Critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government - or, worse, an international terrorist group - and an attack may be imminent.
Decker's never been one to follow the rules, especially with the stakes so high. Forced into an uneasy alliance with Agent Brown, Decker remains laser focused on only one goal: solving the case before it's too late.

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

good story great twists
One of my pet peeves is when the chapter's don't match with the app. there would be approximately 10 chapters read during the span of one on the app which is difficult when you lose your place.

Everything but the kitchen sink
My husband and I listened to this book on a cross country roadtrip. I had read the previous two Amos Decker books and was looking forward to another novel featuring him. Initially we enjoyed the roll out of the story, speculating about the various plot points. But by the time we had listened to about two-thirds of the book we were both finding the story so convoluted and implausible that it was a chore to finish it.
The other thing that bothered us was how Baldacci's characters presented us with "the story so far" summaries every so often. Did he think we were losing track? Yes, we were , but if the story had been better laid out, we wouldn't have been.
By the end we had the feeling that Baldacci had generated a lot of plot ideas for this novel, but just couldn't stand to let any of them go. We suggest he embrace his inner editor next time.
