About this listen
Charlie Donlea, one of the most original new voices in suspense, returns with a haunting novel, laden with twists and high tension, about two abducted girls - one who returns, one who doesn't - and the forensics expert searching for answers.
Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are both high school seniors in the small town of Emerson Bay, North Carolina. When they disappear from a beach party one warm summer night, police launch a massive search. No clues are found, and hope is almost lost until Megan miraculously surfaces after escaping from a bunker deep in the woods. A year later the best-selling account of her ordeal has turned Megan from local hero to national celebrity. It's a triumphant, inspiring story except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing.
Nicole's older sister, Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found, and it will be up to someone like Livia to analyze the evidence and finally determine her sister's fate. Instead the first clue to Nicole's disappearance comes from another body that shows up in Livia's morgue - that of a young man connected to Nicole's past. Livia reaches out to Megan for help, hoping to learn more about the night the two were taken. Other girls have gone missing, too, and Livia is increasingly certain the cases are connected. But Megan knows more than she revealed in her blockbuster book. Flashes of memory are coming together, pointing to something darker and more monstrous than her chilling memoir describes. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for.

narrator...
The narrator has a great voice for overall speaking However, I would not personally listen to another, as her only secondary (character) voice does not suit fiction like this. It felt like 2 voices, hers, and some creaky old creepy uncle.

THE END
This was a really good story, well written until THE END! I was so upset at THE END. It could have been finished so much better. It was like the author ran out of time or creative juice. This is the first time I have ever experienced this. Too bad, THE END just ruined it for me.

One of the best!
This is one of the best books of the 'girl taken' genre I have read!! So many of these mystery books have plots that are preposterous. In this book the story line was completely believable as were the characters. The main character being a medical examiner added freshness and interest.
it kept me guessing to the end.
The narrator was very good.

Really good, shared with friends.
34yr male reviewer - was happy to find one like this, first time with author. I thought narration was spot on compared to 50+ I’ve listened to. First listen to this author and looking for more.

Decently performed despite poor writing.
The story kept my interest at times. Repeated language such as "paged through" files/documents became incredibly irritating when repeated over and over in a single scene.

unique perspective
I found this audio book quite compelling. It offers unique perspective through many point of views including through the eyes of a sister whose sibling had been taken. In doing so the author added layers to the story to make it even more immersive. Such as having character professions described. It’s fascinating how different professions can shape a character’s worldview and influence their actions throughout the plot. There was a plot twist I didn't see coming which was refreshing. However the open ended ending, although potentially obvious, left me with a bit of sour taste in my mouth. I need closure.

Not an especially good book
The plot turned out to be okay in the end. Filled with uninteresting stupid teen talk especially at the beginning, it felt like a mediocre teen romance book. Did not like the narrator and her annoying voice fry or whiny tone when making voices. The second part eventually turned into something worthwhile.
