Publisher's Summary

From USA Today bestselling author Margot Hunt comes the chilling tale of what happens when a family besieged by a storm must play host to uninvited guests.

When a Category 5 hurricane is poised to hit their coastal Florida town, the Davies family takes refuge in their waterfront manse. Marlowe, Lee, and their teenage twins invite their close friends to wait out the storm in comfort and style.

Uninvited are the three strangers who dock on the family’s shore right before the storm descends. Brothers Jason and Bo—and Bo’s girlfriend, Darcy—are a charming, helpful trio in need of a safe haven that the family is only too happy to provide.

But as the storm outside grows more threatening, so does the tension in the house.

Soon, the lines between family, friends, and strangers blur. Danger mounts with every pointed finger and broken confidence, and long-held secrets are revealed one after another until only one truth remains: not everyone is going to make it out alive.

it was all painful

does the author know any conversational verb besides "said"?
text reads like this (not a quote):
"look into my eyes," Jane said.
"I can't see them, " joe said.
"that's because your eyes are closed, " she said.
"you think you always know everything, don't you?" he said.

it's excruciating to listen to. And then there is the painfully obvious plot.

Review

I enjoyed this read and finished it quickly. In the beginning I found it very predictable and though there were a few twists and turns it again became fairly predictable. I did enjoy that the audio format had a different narrator for each character. However, I found it really annoying when each character referred to them selves in the third person and the children referred to their parents by their names instead of mom or dad. To me that felt a little odd and took away some of the realism.

Overall it was an interesting story and if you are looking for an easy thriller this one may be it!

Well done

A well structured and well written thriller with just enough mystery and suspense to keep it interesting to the end. Good job by the narrators as well.

Not worth the time

Characters that I never liked or felt in touch with, a predictable and juvenile story line and a narrator that grated on my every nerve. Needless to say I did NOT care for this book. I'm not sure where the glowing reviews come from for this book but everything about it was bad, in my opinion. Within an hour of listening I had to cringe at almost every line. Good authors use words that add meaning and substance to the story, terrible authors use words to fill up chapters and have no meaning or story value. This book is filled with the latter. And why are the physical characteristics of every male in the book described in detail as though it is a dating site description when it has no bearing on the story? No one knows except the author I suppose.

Worst book I've read in a loooog while. Don't waste your time.

Boring and predicatable

Had to have the narration speed at 1.40x to make it though this one. Pretty lame.

An original gripping thriller filled with heart.

It took me a few chapters to fall into the rhythm of this story but I persevered because I'm familiar with Margot Hunt's other work, and I know I can trust her to take me somewhere new, layered and exciting. She did not disappoint with The Guests. I'm often distrustful of a cast of many narrators as they can tend to be confusing or fail to present a story that flows. I found each of the narrators in this audiobook perfect for their role, and I ended up enjoying each of them in their characters. I also appreciated the nanosecond extra bit of a break between chapters that I found helped the listener to ease into the next section, almost like a palate cleanser. I loved the audiobook. and rate it an easy 5 out of 5. Thanks again, Ms. Hunt!
