About this listen

This boxed set contains the first three books in C. J. Archer's popular Ministry of Curiosities series. Titles in the set include:

  1. The Last Necromancer
  2. Her Majesty's Necromancer
  3. Beyond the Grave

Description of The Last Necromancer:

For five years, Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself.

People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.

Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly made creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn't trust?

Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting.

The color of the cover

Intriguing I like the intensity between the two main characters and that the main character is a woman who is learning how strong she really is

There is a lot to like

There is a lot to like which kept me reading I like the fantasy elements I like the time period setting I like how the various mysteries unfold, but I find the romance between the male and female lead characters irritating - it’s probably realistic, but I just find it irritating - i’m glad I read the trilogy. I don’t think I’ll be reading any more of this.

Not what I expected, unfortunately

I really liked CJ Archer's other series. This one is almost painful. The female MC is a love stuck masochist that keeps trying to win the heart of the male MC. He's a severe tacotease. He reels her in and then pushes her away, crushing her hopes, rinse and repeat. Lots of anger and woh is me stuff. It became really monotonous. The first book was interesting enough that I continued to the second. My eyes began to roll a bit more. And because I'm a hopeful masochist and appreciate CJ's other works, I listened to the third. There won't be a 4th book.

Disappointed; two thirds sickly romance.

I thought this was going to be an exciting historical, paranormal series. instead, it was mostly full of clichés: courageous young woman bessotted with darkly dangerous, disturbed, damaged male whom she is convinced she can change. This formula is an underlying dynamic of female rescuers who end up in abusive relationships - very unhealthy role model. The rapidly beating heart scenes were nauseating and took away from what might have been interesting and exciting adventures. I would have quit listening, but I needed something to help me sleep after the turmoil of the US election and the awful way we humans are behaving in the world. Yup, bored me to sleep😅

Entertaining fantasy

I found the narrator’s voice confusing. At times she sounded British, at others she sounded American.
The story itself was enjoyable and I liked the bits of humour here and there but I just didn’t like the narrator’s rhythm.
