Publisher's Summary

In the late 1800s, three sisters use witchcraft to change the course of history in this powerful novel of magic, family, and the suffragette movement.

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote - and perhaps not even to live - the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.

An homage to the indomitable power and persistence of women, The Once and Future Witches reimagines stories of revolution, motherhood, and women's suffrage - the lost ways are calling.

Praise for The Once and Future Witches:

"A gorgeous and thrilling paean to the ferocious power of women. The characters live, bleed, and roar. I adore them, and long for witchcraft to awaken in all of us. Harrow makes it feel possible, and even likely." (Laini Taylor, New York Times best-selling author)

"A glorious escape into a world where witchcraft has dwindled to a memory of women's magic, and three wild, sundered sisters hold the key to bring it back...A tale that will sweep you away." (Yangsze Choo, New York Times best-selling author)

"This book is an amazing bit of spellcraft and resistance so needed in our times, and a reminder that secret words and ways can never be truly and properly lost, as long as there are tongues to speak them and ears to listen." (P. Djèlí Clark, author The Black God's Drum)

Wow! Ms Harrow, you’re a wonder!

I’m now a serious Alix Harrow fan. Won over by “The Ten Thousand Doors of January”, I am now smitten with “The Once and Future Witches”.

From the setting in a disturbingly different America in 1893 (although there are many eerie parallels to today), to the twists and turns of the story, this is a book very difficult to turn away from. While wishing and hoping for the ending I wanted, I did not want the book to end. I want to continue my relationship with the Eastwood sisters and their circles.

My only minor complaint is with the audio quality. Some edits have not had their volume levels matched. The reader’s wonderful voice often noticeably loses volume for many seconds before resuming its proper level, and, when other people stories are being told, the music is loud enough to be a distraction. As a former audio tech, I know how such things can be easily addressed. So Hachette Audio, maybe you could give the masters a bit of a tweak… or should I perhaps gather a candle stub, some acetate and iron filings and just do it from here?

LOVE SOME GOOD OL' TRANS INCLUSIVE FEMINISM FOR US

I gotta say, it isn't often that I read something that is
a) gorgeously written
b) intersectionally feminist
c) a period fantasy fiction piece

I am content.

Stick with it ...best ending I’ve ever read!

Beautiful story that resonates with how many movements of “togetherness” is has been happening in 2020/2021 ...
As a practicing pagan descendant from long line of Healers - I prefer modern day term “witch” this story really had my heart strings
I loved the nursery rhyme connection bc it definitely rings true. If you know you know ...
I found the book to drag a little in middle but I was so invested with the characters I had to forge. The last 4/5 chapters where brilliant with the epilogue most riveting...even though I knew where it would go it had me in tears mostly for all the pain women in general have had and still go thru today. ...
Loved how the author made this story a “true” representation of LOVE regardless of sex colour or religion or culture. Brilliant! ...def a enjoyable read.

Beautiful story, fantastic prose.

This story caught me from the first words and didn’t let go once. I was in awe the whole time I listened. I love the beauty of the writing, the amazing depth of the characters, and the narrator is just perfect. I highly recommend this book.

Utterly heart shattering, hopeful and beautiful

I cried through multiple passages of this book. Her prose is so gorgeous and smooth and precise and affecting, as is appears all of Alix E. Harrow’s writing is that sometimes I replay her phrases and sentences over and over just to let the beauty and power in them wash over me.

Every single character in this book is whole and complicated and easy to feel an affinity for. Even the villain, in the end, which to me is always the case in great stories.

If you have sisters of your own read this and share it with them.

The narrator of this book, Gabra Zackman, is also quite possibly the best narrator I have come across and I consume a lot of audio.

Bravo.

A Slow Read But A Good One!

Like many reviews, I think this could have been shorter and that would have made it better. But I did really enjoy this! I loved the addition of the spells throughout and the topical conversations that we've been having for hundreds of years. This book beautifully merges magic and feminism - looking at the witch burnings and suffrage movement through a different lens, but one that still feels as though we've seen it before.

The writing was gorgeous and I think the audiobook only heightened this for me. I loved the way that magic was incorporated throughout this to be more of a natural thing in everyday life rather than something outside of the realm of normalcy.

If you want a fast paced story, this is not for you. But if you're in for the long haul, this is it!
