À propos de cet audio
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful...The journey is mesmerizing.” —New York Times
A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.
True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.
As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.

For decades, Nick Burns has been haunted by a decision he made as a young soldier in World War I, when a French artist he’d befriended thrust both her paintings and her baby into his hands—and disappeared. In 1974, with only months left to live, Nick enlists Jenny, a college dropout desperate for adventure, to help him unravel the mystery. The journey leads them from Paris galleries and provincial towns to a surprising place: the Museum of Tears, the life’s work of a lonely Italian craftsman.

Hen and her husband, Lloyd, have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, she’s found some stability and peace. But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husband’s office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago.

It happens more than you might think. One second someone’s life is totally typical, the next it’s terribly tragic. Everything they had, everything they planned, everything they were, all of it vanishes in a flash. Shock and sorrow leave the victim staring into tomorrow’s void, wondering: How did it happen? Who did it? And why?

I could hardly breathe
Beautifully narrated by Brittany Pressley, The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf is a suspense fiction that builds steadily to a crescendo in which the past and present collide in a most explosive climax. During the last two hours of the audiobook, as the stories begin to connect and the truth finally reveals itself, I could hardly breathe. And the ending is a lovely thing -- forming a perfect circle with the beginning. I totally enjoyed this audiobook and have rated it 5 out of 5 stars.

Confusing but makes sense at end
I had to go back a few times to understand the characters and timeline. I think the characters were well developed. And the ending was somewhat predictable. Overall it was a good story. I will look for other novels from this author. The narration was great!

Did not enjoy the ending
I was enjoying this story until the last quarter. The plot started to rely on ridiculous, far-fetched coincidences and horror film cliches that made my eyes roll. It became totally predictable and dragged on for far too long. Narrator was ok and I would listen to her again.
