Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

What the critics say
"The pace is frenetic, the fear and paranoia palpable, and the characters heartbreakingly honest. Iles strikes not one false note.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)
“Would make James Lee Burke or even Pat Conroy proud. This is storytelling at its absolute best, a tale of near-epic status.” (Providence Sunday Journal)
“A superb legal-conspiracy thriller that brings the deep South to life…an enthralling tale.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Every woman is described by sexuality
Great book but .... why is every female character described or evaluated by her appearance, her breasts, her ass, her weight? Is that all this author values in the women?

Wow
First this was the first book written by Greg Iles I have listened to or read.
Second first time hearing Tom Stechschulte narrate.
Greg was a great change of genre from the romance books I have been listening to lately. I believe I will listen to more of his writings, as I was very much drawn into his story. I hope the rest of his books will draw me in as well. Greg is an excellent writer.
Tom’s narration in this book was very very good. His male voice is quite soothing and a little bit sexy. Although he can work on his female voices. But keep in mind not everyone can do both sexes of voices. This did not hinder any of his narrating in this book, I enjoyed his narration completely.
The quiet game is definitely worth the listen. I would recommend this to anyone. As a mystery I was never sure what direction it was going in, which is amazing to me. As I’m pretty good at guessing the ‘Who did it.’
In my opinion you will not be disappointed in this novel. Not in the plot nor the narration.

Loved it!!
Just read Cemetery Road and I decided to try some more of his work. This book, at times, felt reminiscent of Cemetery Road, but it made its own way toward the end. Very enjoyable read. Heading to the next Penn Cage right away!
