Young Rhea is a miller's daughter of low birth, so she is understandably surprised when a mysterious nobleman, Lord Crevan, shows up on her doorstep and proposes marriage. Since commoners don't turn down lords - no matter how sinister they may seem - Rhea is forced to agree to the engagement.

Lord Crevan demands that Rhea visit his remote manor before their wedding. Upon arrival, she discovers that not only was her betrothed married six times before, but his previous wives are all imprisoned in his enchanted castle. Determined not to share their same fate, Rhea asserts her desire for freedom. In answer, Lord Crevan gives Rhea a series of magical tasks to complete, with the threat "Come back before dawn, or else I'll marry you."

With time running out and each task more dangerous and bizarre than the last, Rhea must use her resourcefulness, compassion, and bravery to rally the other wives and defeat the sorcerer before he binds her to him forever.

Not my favourite of T. Kingfisher's. story was a bit on the busy side. Still still whimsical and entertaining.

I love this author and I haven’t been disappointed by any story they’ve written. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but it was definitely not what the story became- a mix of magic, YA drama, witches/sorcerers, time travel.... very cool story!

T.Kingfisher never disappoints. There is always so much wisdom and humor. This story is delightful, love the very reasoned main character.
Will definitely listen to it again.

This has a modern fairy tale feel, although to the best of my knowledge it's original and not a direct retelling of anything in particular. It's a good time. The story is simple and easy to follow. Rhea is an easy character to like and has some good gallows humour in the face of her difficulties. She is a "strong young woman" type of character but not in a cliche way. There is a bit of an unusual tone throughout in that there are dark horrific elements next to whimsical cozy feeling things. Without giving anything away, Rhea will have to face some kind of awful situation but then be able to drink tea and eat scones with friends afterwards. It somehow works and makes you like her as a character more while also making you not want to stop, and find out where things go next. Things conclude in a satisfying way with reasonably good payoff. The narrator does a great job.
