Publisher's Summary

The epic finale to the Bone Witch series! As Tea's dark magic eats away at her, she must save the one she loves most, even while her life - and the kingdoms - are on the brink of destruction.

In the eight kingdoms, none have greater strength or influence than the asha, who hold elemental magic. But only a bone witch has the power to raise the dead. Tea has used this dark magic to breathe life into those she has loved and lost...and those who would join her army against the deceitful royals. But Tea's quest to conjure a shadowglass, to achieve immortality for the one person she loves most in the world, threatens to consume her.

Tea's heartsglass only grows darker with each new betrayal. Her work with the monstrous azi, her thirst for retribution, her desire to unmask the Faceless-they all feed the darkrot that is gradually consuming her heartsglass. She is haunted by blackouts and strange visions, and when she wakes with blood on her hands, Tea must answer to a power greater than the elder asha or even her conscience. Tea's life-and the fate of the kingdoms-hangs in the balance.

Featured Article: The Best Young Adult Audiobooks For Women Of All Ages

Many people equate "growing up" with "growing serious." But while interests may change over time, age does not have to be the deciding factor in what games you play, movies, or books you enjoy. Young adult novels are the perfect example of this. Though written with a teenage audience in mind, women of all ages are sure to enjoy the genre’s hallmarks: strong yet flawed characters, heartbreaking twists and turns, romance, and drama.

Beautiful ending

The way i sobbed my way through this last book... I appreciate when the story gets better with every book, and this author just knows how to make you feel things. The characters just stayed with me for a while even after i was done reading. It's worth going through the slow developpement of book 1 to get to this final beauty.

Great Series

This was the best of the three books! I do wish the series hadn't been split into past and future timelines. I think it would have been better in linear time. Worth a relisted for sure.

surprisingly great

A very well- planned story, and very well-read as well. as someone who generally doesn't read young adult fiction, this series was well worth the read. A neat fusion of magic and adventure into a Memoirs of a Geisha story of feel.

Fitting Conclusion To The Trilogy

[Author Rin Chupeco is non-binary and prefers the pronouns They/Them.  I will honor that convention]

To be honest, this book makes very little sense if you haven't read Books One & Two of the 'Bone Witch' series - I maintain that all three should be looked at as entries in a single work rather than individual episodes in a story arc. If you invest yourself, however, Chupeco's imaginative world will remind you of N.K. Jemisin's 'Broken Earth' trilogy (.. but with it's romantic elements compares most closely with Leigh Bardugo's 'Grisha' series).

In it's favor, the book finally delivers on the promise of "Dark" Fantasy suggested by the use of a protagonist that practices Death Magic: Tea threatens to succumb to the temptation of embracing "Black Heartsglass" (the evil elements within herself) as she seeks the ambiguously good/evil "Shadowglass" teased in Ancient texts and threatens to devastate society (to reform it as she thinks it should be). The portrayal in the first two books of Tea as developing into a conflicted, vengeance-focussed antihero is nicely explained and culminates in a heart-pounding confrontation with tyrannical elites and the secretive "Faceless".
Unfortunately, the author also incorporates themes of betrayal and loss that are a little too nebulous, the "heartsglass" imagery is overly complicated, and the introduction of themes of sexuality (hetero-/homo-/bi-) and gender identity into the story is a bit of a headscratcher (they're fine.. but glaringly irrelevant and actually interfere with the illusion of realism. Chupeco takes readers out of the story for a cultural agenda😞).

Regardless, they write a satisfying conclusion to an immersive Fantasy tale.
This book isn't as meaningful and well-organized as Book Two, but 'The Shadow Glass' ties up all of the loose ends. It's well-written, well-executed, and worthwhile.

No doubt my favorable impression of the book is bolstered by much better volume leveling in comparison to earlier novels (Emily Woo Zeller's brutal issues with whisper-quiet text alternating with eardrum-bursting dialogue are much improved in this recording).
Well done, Blackstone Audio Inc. engineers.
[Will Damron's performance remains exemplary, BTW.]

Altogether, this 7/10 star conclusion is worth a listen.. IF you can get it as a 'Plus' offering. Despite a pleasing closure to a fascinating imaginary scenario, you should consider other Fantasy options for your money if it's demanded. Be aware that you will need to invest in Books One & Two as well..

Constantly changing pronunciations.

Constantly changing pronunciations. As it says. Main character names shouldn't be hard to keep consistent.

The best book I have read or listened to in recent years

Emily Woo Zeller did a fantastic job bringing this series to life. At first I didn’t love the two timelines, but halfway through the second book it began complementing the story more. For this final book, it brought all the emotion and twists together in a way that one straightforward story would not have achieved. This trilogy was great, and this was a standout novel for sure. I haven’t cried that much from a death since The Book Thief. Highly highly recommend this series.

Loved this entire series!

I loved the story and the plot and the characters.

These are books that slip between a few different timelines with all of the same characters. Sometimes in the present with them and other times in their recent past(s). Magical, dramatic, and imaginative. Happy and sad.

I found it confusing on occasion because I wasn't always aware of the shift in timelines by the reading of the book. I believe if I had the book in my hand I would be able to tell. The writing made the timeline clear fairly quickly but, sometimes I would go back and re-listen a bit once I realized that the timeline had shifted. I didn't find the reading of the book to have a specific enough way to discern what timeline the characters were in. It could also be that when I listen to books I am often multitasking and perhaps I missed the subtlety in the reading as they shifted between timelines. I also found I couldn't easily figure out who was talking because there were two readers and it was a bit confusing when the characters sounded different. I think this was especially noticeable because I was listening to the books in succession.

Excellent story

I really enjoyed the whole trilogy! For some reason, the narrators changed the pronunciation of Kalan's name in reading The Shadow Glass, and it really bothered me. I wish his name had been said the same way for all three books, as this was confusing.
