About this listen
Rita and Rosie Stevens are only nine and five years old when their widowed mother marries a violent bully called Jimmy Randall and has a baby boy by him. Under pressure from her new husband, she is persuaded to send the girls to an orphanage, not knowing that the papers she has signed will entitle them to do what they like with the children. And it is not long before the powers that be decide to send a consignment of orphans to their sister institution in Australia. Among them - without their family's consent or knowledge - are Rita and Rosie, the throwaway children.

Story
In 1950s Quebec, French and English tolerate each other with precarious civility - much like Maggie Hughes' parents. Maggie's English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that don't include marriage to the poor French boy on the next farm over. But Maggie's heart is captured by Gabriel Phénix. When she becomes pregnant at 15, her parents force her to give baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life "back on track".

Story
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Absorbing story
I wasn’t expecting to be too excited about this book but was very pleasantly surprised. Written with warmth and detail it described the tumultuous chorus of humanity -from the darkest to the loveliest. The narration was so good that I cringed at the children’s whining! It would have been ideal if an Australian accent could have used!!? Overall, however, I enjoyed this story immensely. Thank you!

What stopped me from rating story as 5
it Is just one bad thing after another with no upsides. Emily V ending was not satisfying. No reason ever offered for what she was doing. Would have preferred a different ending for several of the characters.

Well written and well performed.
Wow, what a story! It gave me tears of sadness and tears of joy too. It is one of the best Audible books that I've listened to in a long time. Anne Dover did a stellar job at narration. I was so impressed with her performance that I will look for other books she narrated.
